Job DescriptionPOSITION TITLE: EL Instructional Specialist
RECRUITED BY: Director of Bilingual Services
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Building Principal/Director of Bilingual Services
POSITION SUMMARY:
Candidate must have the ability to understand and accept the Mission of the South Bend Community School Corporation in reference to the education of English Learners (ELs). Candidate must have basic knowledge of second language acquisition and its terminology. Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS- Two (2) years of effective experience working with Limited English Proficient (LEP) students preferred
- Knowledge of WIDA ELD Standards for grades 6-8
- An explicit understanding of effective ELD instructional practices and Second Language Acquisition research
- Bachelor’s degree in English or related field
- Certified teachers or candidates working in a Transition to Teaching program
- ENL License required or must be willing to working on an ENL License
- Will be assigned ENL ELA & EL Lab classes for grades 6-8 or will
- Advanced knowledge of written and spoken English
- Participates in required professional development, during the school year and summer
- Excellent communication skills between coworkers and third parties
- Ability to follow procedures
- Excellent organization skills
- Ability to use initiative and work without close supervision
- Ability to analyze and use data to support instruction in English language development (ELD)
- Sensitivity to cultural differences
- Must be able to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Docs
- Have excellent English (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) skills
- Provides direct ELD support 100% of the school day to Limited English Proficient (LEP) students (levels 1- 4.9) using a sheltered immersion model of instruction or a push-in / pull-out model
- Assists and supports instructional staff in the implementation of ELD instruction at the building level by sharing proven instructional strategies and materials
- Works with the Bilingual Education Specialist and the Bilingual English Literacy Specialist to manage, analyze and review each EL student’s assessment data to ensure the highest level of English language development in listening, speaking, reading and writing
- Works with the Bilingual Services team to identify materials and supplies to support instruction, professional development, and parent involvement
- Works directly with identified LEP students (Levels 1.0-4.9) and provides ELD support 100% of the teaching day
- Demonstrates and models exemplary ELD practices
- Provides leadership for ELD across the school community
- Helps strengthen family and school ties by engaging families in English language development opportunities
- Participates in building level and Bilingual Services Department professional development opportunities and meetings
