Sr Laboratory Technician
This is a Sr Laboratory Technician role within the South Bend Materials Engineering organization. This position will function as a technician in the Materials Engineering Laboratory supporting activities across various Laboratories.
Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinate daily workload in the Chemistry, Carbon and Metals Lab: receiving incoming work in Linked Information Management System (LIMS), prioritize work to meet schedule demands, and communicate work status/changes with customers and laboratory members.
- Perform titrations for solution analysis of production processing chemistries.
- Perform Salt Fog analysis utilizing standard industry techniques.
- Perform Oxygen Nitrogen Hydrogen (ONH), Coined Density and Fusion Boundary analysis of powder materials.
- Perform viscosity, refractive index, specific gravity and turbidity analysis of various coatings.
- Prepare samples for Xray Diffraction (XRD) analysis.
- Perform cross sectioning of materials/parts and analyze using metallography techniques.
- Utilize microscope instrumentation and software to capture images and/or obtain measurements.
- Operate various analytical instruments.
- Interface with internal and external customers to define appropriate test methods that effectively meet customer requirements.
- Manage solvents, acids, bases, chemicals and consumables inventories.
- Troubleshoot and maintain laboratory test equipment.
Basic Qualifications:
- HS diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a laboratory environment.

- Demonstration of machining, manufacturing and mechanical aptitude.
- Ability and knowledge to perform advanced laboratory techniques, such as titrations and wet bench chemistry.
- Familiarity and experience with various analytical instruments, such as FTIR, TGA/DSC, ONH, SEM/EDS, XRD, Microscopes and XRF.
- Ability to read and interpret specification and drawing requirements
- Effective documentation and reporting of test results using Microsoft Office applications.
- Able to work independently and resolve difficult problems when they arise.
- Communicate effectively with customers and colleagues to successfully achieve desired results.
- Familiar with laboratory safety practices and experience working with hazardous chemicals, solvents, acids, and bases.
