Job Description

This role focuses on assembling large equipment and sheet metal components by fastening joints and seams using a variety of hand and power tools, while consistently meeting quality specifications and safety guidelines. You will work in a collaborative team environment, performing mechanical assembly tasks that closely resemble construction and fabrication work, including layout, measurement, and installation activities.

Responsibilities

  • Fasten joints and seams in sheet metal using fasteners and drivers to assemble components into finished products.
  • Screw sheet metal panels together according to specifications and quality standards.
  • Install insulation within sheet metal assemblies as required.
  • Use power tools such as drills, grinders, plasma cutting equipment, impacts, and saws to cut, shape, and assemble materials.
  • Lay out, measure, and mark dimensions and reference lines on materials using tape measures, levels, and squares.
  • Use a calculator and tape measure to perform accurate measurements, including reading to 1/16 of an inch.
  • Fasten seams and joints together with bolts, rivets, caulks, and metal drive clips to create secure assemblies.
  • Drill holes in metal for screws, bolts, and rivets using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Assemble and fit pre-fabricated parts to form subassemblies and complete larger mechanical assemblies.
  • Perform mechanical assembly of large equipment using hand tools and basic mechanical knowledge.
  • Apply construction-related skills such as carpentry, drywall, metal roofing, or general construction to support fabrication and assembly tasks.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area to support safety and efficiency.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and quality standards while working with sheet metal, power tools, and fabrication equipment.
  • Collaborate with team members to complete projects on schedule and support a productive team environment.

Essential Skills

  • Previous mechanical assembly experience, particularly building large equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with power tools including drills, grinders, plasma cutting equipment, impacts, and saws.
  • Experience in construction-related work such as carpentry, drywall, metal roofing, or general construction.
  • Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately to 1/16 of an inch.
  • Proficiency using hand tools, including wrenches and socket wrenches.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds safely and repeatedly as part of daily tasks.
  • Comfort working with sheet metal, including fastening, drilling, and assembling components.
  • Familiarity with mechanical assembly processes and basic fabrication techniques.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow instructions.
  • Ownership of steel-toe footwear suitable for a fabrication shop environment.
  • Ownership of a basic set of hand tools (wrenches, socket wrenches) or the ability to obtain them within two weeks of starting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints to support accurate assembly and layout.
  • Experience with sheet metal fabrication, including cutting, fitting, and fastening.
  • Experience in installation assembly or fabrication work in industrial or construction settings.
  • Experience using levels, squares, and other layout tools to ensure precise measurements.
  • Mechanical aptitude and interest in working with tools and large mechanical systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.

Work Environment

This position is based in a fabrication shop that manufactures large control panels designed to sit on top of commercial buildings. The environment is typical of a fab shop: darker, dirty, and loud, with ongoing metal fabrication and assembly activities. You will regularly use power tools such as drills, grinders, plasma cutting equipment, impacts, and saws, as well as hand tools like wrenches and socket wrenches, tape measures, levels, and squares.

Steel-toe footwear is required, and you are expected to bring or obtain a basic set of hand tools. The standard schedule runs from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with additional work available on Fridays and Saturdays as needed.
