General Mechanic

The General Mechanic is responsible for performing a wide range of maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and installation tasks to support the operational integrity of school facilities. This position ensures all building systems and equipment, such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and other mechanical components, are maintained at optimal levels. The General Mechanic works independently or as part of a team to ensure repairs are performed efficiently, safely, and in a timely manner to support a safe and functional school environment.

Characteristics of Work

  • Frequent Activities: The General Mechanic performs general maintenance and repair tasks on building systems and equipment throughout the school corporation. These include, but are not limited to, plumbing fixtures, HVAC units, electrical components, mechanical systems, and structural repairs. Duties involve diagnosing problems, replacing or installing components, and responding to routine and emergency maintenance requests. The role requires the operation of various hand and power tools, adherence to safety protocols, and documentation of completed work.

    The employee is responsible for maintaining assigned tools, supplies, and service vehicles.
  • Occasional Activities: Occasional responsibilities include assisting with planning and cost estimation for maintenance projects, collaborating with school supervisors and administrators to prioritize needs, and participating in professional development related to safety standards, systems updates, or building code changes. The role may also require coordinating efforts with outside contractors and vendors when specialized services are necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general maintenance and repair tasks on building systems and equipment, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and other mechanical systems.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose problems with school facilities and equipment, providing timely solutions.
  • Install and replace parts and equipment as needed to maintain school operations.
  • Supervise maintenance employees, assigning tasks and ensuring work is completed efficiently and to standard.
  • Ensure all maintenance and repair activities are performed in compliance with safety guidelines and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of all work performed, including repairs, installations, and maintenance schedules.
  • Coordinate with school leadership and other departments to prioritize and address maintenance needs.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of preventative maintenance programs to reduce downtime and prolong the life of school facilities and equipment.
  • Respond promptly to emergency repairs and maintenance requests to minimize disruption to school operations.
  • Perform regular inspections of school facilities to identify potential issues before they become critical.

Qualifications

  • Required Experience or Training: The candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in general mechanical maintenance or a related field is required. A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are necessary. The candidate must be able to lift up to 60 pounds without assistance. Basic knowledge of safety procedures and compliance with OSHA and building codes is also required.
  • Desired Experience or Training: Technical certification or post-secondary training in mechanical systems, building maintenance, or related fields is preferred. Experience in reading blueprints and wiring diagrams, familiarity with building automation systems, and knowledge of energy efficiency practices are highly desirable. Prior work in an educational or institutional setting is also a plus.
  • Special Requirements: The candidate must demonstrate practical knowledge in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining a range of building systems. The ability to work independently or collaboratively with maintenance personnel and other departments is essential. Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records and follow maintenance schedules are necessary.
