Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate front‑end loader, single and tandem axle trucks, manual transmission semi‑tractor and trailer, biosolids spreader, horizontal grinder, roll‑off truck, and screen machines.
  • Skillfully use handheld tools and equipment.
  • Maintain records of tonnage, loads, acres, and fields applied by biosolids spreaders.
  • Assist with other departments in the removal of snow in City streets and alleys.
  • Load customers' vehicles with materials.
  • Maintain safe work areas and physically clean equipment. Remove materials on and from under equipment using various hand tools.
  • Change screen on equipment.
  • Interact with co‑workers and the public with tact and diplomacy.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and consistent performance.
  • Manage time, make sound decisions and work independently.
  • Follow directions and relay work progress in an effective manner.
  • Follow safety procedures, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip vehicle inspections.
  • Operate two‑way radio.
  • Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as apparent or as assigned.

  • Ability to communicate with the public with a focus on positive customer service.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to maintain best practices and learn new procedures.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, safety rules, and memos.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Ability to effectively present information one‑on‑one to customers and other employees.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods under adverse field conditions.
  • Knowledge of crew practices, basic safety and traffic rules and regulations.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Prefer high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in heavy equipment operations.
  • Must provide own tools and maintain adequate tools to perform job functions.
Certificates, Licenses & Registrations
  • Must attend and pass heavy equipment safety class within 30 calendar days.
  • Must have valid Driver’s License. Must have or be able to obtain within 60 days Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake endorsement.

Specific vision abilities required in this job include close and distant vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Environment

The work environment will be primarily outside in various weather conditions (extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, snow, etc.).
