(Code & Zoning Enforcement Official)

The Town of South Boston, VA, is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Community Standards Specialist. This position will be responsible for the application, inspections, and enforcement of Town codes, standards, and other regulations relating to the Zoning Ordinance, Town Code, and other applicable state and local ordinances. This is a position within the Planning & Zoning Department under the supervision of the Town Manager or their designee.

This is a newly created position which will play a vital role in the Town’s efforts to improve community standards and public safety through fair and constructive code enforcement. Although this position will primarily focus on zoning and other existing land use regulations, it is intended to develop further to include responsibilities relating to the enforcement of other regulations, such as the Virginia statewide building and property maintenance codes.

Competitive candidates for this position will have training and/or experience in local government zoning/code/law enforcement, housing/building inspections, and/or property maintenance (experience in Virginia is a plus), knowledge of the South Boston Town Code and Zoning Ordinances, a desire to work with the public to answer questions, explain and seek cooperative remedies to code violations, and take reasonable and impartial enforcement actions as necessary.

Relevant Virginia certifications such as Certified Zoning Administrator, Maintenance Official, Building Official, Residential/Commercial or Combination Inspector, and/or Fire Prevention/Protection Inspector are a plus.

Position Requirements
  • Must hold a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license;
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Must hold or obtain within twelve (12) months of employment the Virginia Certified Zoning Official (CZO) certification.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position, requiring a minimum of 40-hours per week.

Occasional work during evenings, nights, weekends, or holidays may be required subject to incidental necessity.

Selected applicants will be subject to a comprehensive background investigation and pre-employment drug screening. Anticipated starting salary is $50,500 - $60,000 depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications. Benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, participation in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS), and paid federal, state, and local holidays.
