Description :
The Town of South Boston is seeking candidates for the position of Vehicle and Building Maintenance Technician I. Performs difficult skilled technical work participating in street system maintenance and repair activities and related work as required. Work is performed under limited supervision of Facilities Operations Administrative Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
- Works under the Facilities Operations Administrative Manager, conducting daily inspections of the maintenance workshop. Manages equipment and vehicle repairs, orders supplies, and codes purchases.
- Performs repair and maintenance on equipment and vehicles using advanced diagnostics tools for repair recommendations. Maintains a log documenting all maintenance and repairs.
- Obtains quotes for external vehicle and equipment repairs, arranges transportation to vendors, and verifies repair progress. Monitors repairs on shop equipment and maintains routine prevention plans.
- Designs and maintains a comprehensive routine maintenance program for all public works equipment and vehicles. Develops schedules, oversees inspections, and ensures timely upkeep to optimize performance and longevity.
- Marks cemetery lots for burial, records lot ownership, and manages monument permits. Assists buyers and funeral homes, referring them to the finance office for payment.
- Maintains inventory of town vehicles and equipment, updating the spreadsheet monthly and checking for corrections. Assists in arranging sales of surplus equipment.
- Assists in severe weather operations, operating equipment to clean and plow streets. Operates dump trucks and aids the street maintenance department when needed.
- Other duties may be assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OF WORK
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of town vehicles.
- Familiarity with tools, equipment, and special tools used in vehicle repair and maintenance.
- Ability to detect worn, defective, or improperly adjusted parts.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and keep records of repair and service operations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or GED and considerable maintenance experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements:
- A valid Commonwealth of Virginia commercial driver's license.
- Valid CDL Class A or
B. - Minimum of 5 years of work experience.
- Proficiency in detail and ability to deal with the public and businesses closely associated with the town.
- Must be available for on-call work outside normal business hours to assist funeral homes with marking cemetery lots.
- Subject to work overtime as requested for special events or weather situations.
Benefits and Salary:
Salary Range: $37,274 - $47,000 per year depending on experience and qualifications.
