Location: Columbia

Position Purpose

In this position, you will respond to requests for proposals by developing rates and pricing assumptions, reviewing contract clauses, and preparing supporting documentation for proposal cost elements. You will also manage special projects assigned by the department manager or requested by other groups, coordinate internal and external audits, compile audit data, support accounting and costing system functionality, partner with information systems on system enhancements, monitor internal controls and key performance measures, and complete preventative or corrective actions within the department.

Additionally, you will review departmental policies, procedures, forms, and checklists to identify opportunities for process improvements and increased efficiency.

Responsibilities
  • Exercise accounting control over a group of accounts within a given specialized area.
  • Analyze complex financial data and extract or define relevant information to determine past financial performance or project future outcomes.
  • Record, classify, and summarize financial transactions and events in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Provide information to customers, explain accounting transactions, and resolve accounting issues or discrepancies.
  • Prepare journal entries and reconcile general ledger accounts.
  • Analyze financial transactions to ensure proper recording of revenues to the general ledger.
  • Research expenses and explain cost or allocation variances.
  • Prepare budgets for assigned departments and assist cost center managers as needed.
  • Ensure expenses are allocated in accordance with business contracts and departmental operating standards.
  • Develop financial reports for analysis, forecasting, trending, budgeting, and results analysis.
  • Use software applications such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate, or format data and reports.
  • Review the work of less experienced staff members and prepare or present training sessions in response to repetitive errors.
  • Review departmental policies, procedures, and forms to identify improvement areas and draft preliminary updates.

Qualifications
  • Required

    Education:

    Bachelor's degree in a job‑related field with 24 semester hours in Accounting. (Persons hired prior to August1,2008, in an accounting position only require 21 semester hours of Accounting.)
  • Required

    Work Experience:

    8 years of accounting experience.
  • Required

    Skills and Abilities:

    Comprehensive knowledge of fundamental accounting concepts, practices and procedures; knowledge of mathematical and statistical concepts; ability to persuade, influence or negotiate; excellent leadership, communication, organizational and analytical skills; strong decision‑making skills; ability to work independently.
  • Required Software and Tools: Microsoft Office; ability to use data retrieval applications.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree‑in Accounting or other job‑related degree; experience in Government Contracting and/or Business Proposals; strong Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, v‑lookups and data manipulation); ability to write complex queries using database software.
