Overview
The South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) invites candidates to serve as the Administrative Operations Sergeant, reporting to the Administrative Captain. The role oversees intake and administrative processes to ensure accurate documentation, operational efficiency, and compliance with agency policies.
Job PurposeUnder the supervision of the Administrative Captain, the Administrative Operations Sergeant manages intake and administrative operations, ensuring that all admissions, transfers, releases, screenings, searches, and related documentation are accurate and timely. The position supports the facility’s security and rehabilitative mission by maintaining organized, accountable operations and promoting a structured environment that enhances safety, professionalism, and positive outcomes for youth.
Responsibilities- Provide direct supervision and oversight of intake staff and facility intake operations.
- Ensure all admissions, transfers, releases, screenings, searches, and related documentation are completed accurately, timely, and in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
- Support reviewing shift-generated documentation, including logbooks, incident reports, counts, security checks, movement logs, intake records, transportation records, and other operational reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
- Oversee the maintenance, organization, retention, and security of facility records, operational reports, and administrative documentation.
- Ensure confidential information is safeguarded and records are readily accessible for operational and audit purposes.
- Monitor daily facility operations through operational reports, communications, and administrative systems.
- Compile data, prepare reports, identify operational trends, and provide administrative support to facility leadership to support informed decision‑making and regulatory compliance.
- Provide supervision, coaching, training, and performance management for intake and administrative operations staff.
- Promote accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement while supporting facility initiatives, audits, inspections, and special projects.
- Perform other job‑related duties and tasks as assigned by the supervisor to further support the agency’s mission and values.
- High school diploma.
- Must be an officer in compliance with, and certified under CLEE (Continuing Law Enforcement Education) within six (6) months of employment.
- Must achieve an 80 % rate on competency/proficiency exam.
- Knowledge of state laws, institutional rules, regulations, and requirements for the control of youth and Child Abuse Statutes.
- Knowledge of secure facility operations and programs.
- Ability to instruct, handle, and supervise youth in various activities. Interpersonal, verbal, and non‑verbal communication skills.
- Good judgment and initiative in a variety of situations.
- Ability to build healthy relationships with youth and communicate effectively to promote respect, trust, and manage challenging behaviors.
- Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with employees, families, and the general public.
- Valid state driver's license and ability to operate a state vehicle.
- Daily schedule adherence, accountability to facility processes, documentation of events, and effective supervision of multiple youths.
- Experience working in a secured facility relating to custody, control, transportation or recapture of youth within DJJ jurisdiction.
- Physical ability to bend, lift, interact, respond to emergencies, and work in extreme weather conditions.
- Ready to work shift hours (day, evening, night, weekend, holidays) and subject to mandatory overtime as needed.
- Will undergo training including Gatehouse, Control Room, Facility Entry Points, Staff Transportation, CPR/First Aid/AED, and CLEE certification.
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field and experience supervising, mentoring, and interacting with at‑risk youth.
- 21 years of age with a valid driver's license and high school diploma or equivalent.
