Communications Shift Supervisor

This purpose of this class is to supervise the Communications staff within E-911; receive in-coming emergency and non-emergency communications and coordinating responses to calls for service; involves operating CAD systems, monitoring communications, and ensuring accurate record-keeping. Demonstrates strong multitasking abilities, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to public safety.

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary

• Supervises subordinate communication employees; supervisory duties include instructing, planning and assigning work, reviewing the work of subordinates for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with policies and standards, coordinating activities, acting on employee problems, offers advice and assistance as needed; assisting with the selection of new employees, evaluating employee performance and recommending promotions, salary increases, discipline, transfers, and/or discharge.
• Performs dispatch duties including receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls for law enforcement, fire, EMS, rescue and haz-mat response; receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls for various government agencies, utility companies, and other service agencies; monitoring radio communications; monitoring nuclear plant computer/alarm system; providing directions and other information to officers in the field; calling wrecker companies, etc.
• Provides routine assistance and information to callers, such as taking messages, providing directions, routing calls, etc. Initiates calls to persons at the request of officers.
• Receives, reviews, and responds to inquiries, complaints, and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility.
• Records and maintains records of all radio traffic from the Sheriff’s Department, Detectives, EMS, and Fire units into the CAD system.
• Validates and corrects NCIC entries; enters missing persons, stolen vehicles and other stolen items into NCIC at the request of Deputies or Detectives. Coordinates NCIC information exchange with SLED. Monitors messaging from NCIC terminal. Responds and relays all Hit notifications received from other agencies on NCIC terminal.
• Completes DMV inquiries for Deputies and Detectives.
• Researches criminal history for Deputies and Detectives and 911 recordings for judicial proceedings, internal affairs, etc.
• Provides court testimony as necessary.
• Prepares and submits various reports as required by the department and County.
• Interacts with support and service personnel and other agency heads when problems or a coordinated effort is needed or when there are equipment problems.
• Performs any task that is needed to maintain all 911 systems to remain accessible for users.
• Remains on call 24 hours per day for emergency response and any problems that occur with the Communications Center.
• Performs general administrative/clerical work as required, including conducting meetings, preparing correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.
• Attends training sessions, meetings, seminars, and attends conferences or workshops to enhance job knowledge and skills.
• Performs other related duties as required.

The responsibility of each employee to comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices. Each employee must follow safety training and instructions provided by their supervisor. Each employee must also properly wear and maintain all personal protective equipment required for their job. Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injury or illnesses.

Every manager/supervisor is responsible for enforcing all safety rules and regulations. In addition, they are responsible for ensuring that a safe work environment is maintained, safe work practices are followed, and employees are properly trained.
