Civil Estimator

Columbia, SC Direct Hire Opportunity Full-Time | Monday Friday | 8:00 AM 5:00 PM

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Civil Estimator to join a growing and well-established heavy civil construction contractor in Columbia, SC. This individual will play a critical role in preparing accurate and competitive estimates for a variety of site development, utility, demolition, and infrastructure projects.

The ideal candidate will have experience estimating self-performed heavy civil work and possess a strong understanding of grading, underground utilities, demolition, earthwork, and site development operations. This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate with project managers, field personnel, subcontractors, vendors, and clients throughout the bidding process.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $100,000 $ 140,000 annually (based on experience)

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs from conceptual, schematic, and final construction drawings.
  • Develop labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor cost estimates.
  • Evaluate project plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and contract documents.
  • Solicit, review, and analyze vendor and subcontractor quotations.
  • Identify construction risks, site constraints, and potential cost impacts.
  • Develop value engineering solutions and alternative construction approaches.
  • Prepare change order pricing and estimate revisions as needed.
  • Assist project managers and field teams during project turnover and startup.
  • Prepare comprehensive bid packages and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain accurate estimating records and cost databases.
  • Collaborate with owners, engineers, architects, subcontractors, and internal project teams throughout the bidding process.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum several years of estimating experience with a Heavy Civil Contractor.
  • Proven experience estimating:
    Grading, Earthwork, Underground Utilities, Demolition, Site Development Projects
  • Strong understanding of construction means, methods, and sequencing.
  • Experience preparing estimates ranging from $500K to $20M+.
  • Ability to identify constructability issues and project risks.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
Technical Requirements

Proficiency with:

  • Microsoft Project or Primavera
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Word
  • Adobe Acrobat

Experience with heavy civil estimating software is highly preferred.

Additional Requirements
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Ability to visit project sites as needed.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to estimate accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple bids, deadlines, and priorities simultaneously.
