Key Responsibilities
  • Provide on‑site emergency physician services that meet or exceed American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) guidelines and contract standards.
  • Be present on time for scheduled shifts; at no time may the Emergency Department be left without qualified physicians to provide clinical care.
  • Review all inpatient admissions recommended by advanced practice providers (physician assistants or nurse practitioners). Ensure person‑to‑person handoffs from admitting provider to a responsible member of the admitting team.
  • Provide consultation to and communicate with referring clinicians to determine appropriate courses of treatment. Initiate appropriate social work referrals for identified homeless Veterans and for patients without primary care who regularly present to the Emergency Department.
  • Apply or directly supervise the application of orthopedic devices (e.g., splints and braces) to stabilize orthopedic injuries.
  • Follow all established medication policies and procedures. Do not provide sample medications to patients.
  • Provide discharge education and follow‑up instructions coordinated with the next care setting for all Emergency Department patients.
  • Ensure mechanisms are in place and used to notify patients of test results in accordance with VHA policy.
  • Complete care documentation using the current Electronic Health Record (EHR). Select appropriate Evaluation and Management (E&M) and procedure codes; documentation must support the codes and be completed by the end of each patient encounter.
  • Complete EDIS training and use the software as designed. Meet Emergency Medicine Management Tool (EMMT) adoption metrics, maintaining Provider Entry Assignment and Provider Entry Disposition metrics at or above the required threshold (≥75%).
  • Adhere to patient‑safety and infection‑control standards. Report patient‑safety incidents using the VA Patient Safety Reporting System within 24 hours and notify the Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) as required.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, peer review, and staff meetings as required by facility leadership (including the specified annual peer‑review and staff‑meeting hours). Complete Quality Management/Performance Improvement (QM/PI) documentation for procedures, complications, and outcomes.
  • When a patient requires a higher level of care than can be provided within facility capabilities, provide appropriate stabilization and coordinate transfer to an accepting facility able to provide the needed level of care.
  • Maintain compliance with privacy, confidentiality, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements; complete all required training on time per facility policy.
  • Completes required organizational compliance education, including assigned requirements that are client‑specified, for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.
Qualifications Basic Requirements/Certifications
  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted license as a physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Education Required
  • Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
  • Must be Board Certified/Board Eligible by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
Physical Requirements
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • May require bending, stooping and lifting up to 25 lbs.
Other Special Qualifications
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English to effectively communicate.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required.
  • Pass/possess VA Public Trust Clearance.
