Assistant Dean for Pre-clerkship Curriculum
The University of South Carolina School of Medicine is seeking a student-centered faculty member to serve as the Assistant Dean for Pre-clerkship Curriculum. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, the Assistant Dean plays a key leadership role in the delivery and advancement of the pre-clerkship curriculum. This position involves working closely with course, block and thread directors, the curriculum committee, and basic science departments to ensure curricular integration, quality, and alignment with the medical school program objectives.
The Assistant Dean also champions initiatives that enhance student success, promote faculty development, and encourage innovation in curriculum design and teaching. Candidates must be eligible for a faculty appointment at the Clinical Associate Professor (or higher) level at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia.
Representative Duties- Supports faculty, course directors, department chairs, and the curriculum committee in developing and maintaining innovative, high-quality pre-clerkship courses and curriculum, while fostering close collaboration among all stakeholders.
- Tracks student progress throughout the first two years of medical school and coordinates with course directors to monitor academic performance and professionalism across the pre-clerkship phase.
- Collaborates with the Academic Review Committee and provides academic advising to pre-clerkship students.
- Prepares and presents regular reports on the pre-clerkship curriculum (e.g., contact hours, pass rates, pedagogy).
- Supports and promotes innovation in teaching, provides leadership on curricular improvements, policy updates, and educational CQI processes
- Serve as Executive Chief Proctor for NBME exams
- Manages academic calendars and schedules for pre-clerkship courses and blocks
- Serve ex officio on key School of Medicine committees (e.g., M1/M2 Subcommittee, Curriculum Committee)
- Contributes to teaching in pre-clerkship courses based on area of expertise and interest.
- Performs other duties as assigned
- The candidate must demonstrate deep knowledge of current issues, trends, and best practices in pre-clerkship medical education, including curriculum design, assessment strategies, active learning methodologies, and accreditation standards.
- Proficiency in using Academic and Learning Management Systems to support curriculum delivery, student assessment, and faculty-student engagement.
- Strong understanding of faculty governance processes and experience collaborating with faculty-led committees on curriculum development and academic policy.
- The candidate must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, and the ability to guide teams toward shared goals in curriculum and education.
- Build and maintain effective, respectful relationships with faculty, students, staff and administrators.
