F. Rice School of Law is seeking to hire a Legal Writing Instructor to teach Legal Research, Analysis & Writing to first year law students to begin August 2026. This is a full-time, nine-month, professional-track appointment that is not eligible for tenure, but is eligible for promotion pursuant to University and School of Law policies. The Legal Writing Instructor will be responsible for teaching Legal Research, Analysis and Writing I & II to approximately 40 students each year, working closely with a reference librarian who will team-teach the course with the Legal Writing Instructor.
In some years, the Legal Writing Instructor may alternatively teach upper-level writing courses that prepare students for law practice after successful completion of the bar exam. The Legal Writing Instructor will also be assigned some faculty governance and service responsibilities. A Legal Writing Instructor will initially receive a one-year contract, followed by a two-year contract, followed by a three-year contract, conditional upon funding and satisfactory performance.
Upon successful completion of these initial contracts, a Legal Writing Instructor may receive presumptively renewable five-year contracts, conditional upon funding and satisfactory performance. The Legal Writing Instructor may also have the opportunity to earn a summer stipend by taking on additional responsibilities, such as teaching an elective course in Maymester or the Summer semester.
Required Education And Experience
- Applicants must have a J.D. degree.
- Applicants must also have at least two years of experience in law practice or a judicial clerkship.
Preferred Qualifications
- The ideal candidate should have a record of outstanding academic achievement in law school.
- Excellent analytical, research, writing, and interpersonal skills; and teaching or tutoring experience.
- Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to teaching legal writing.
Special Instructions to Applicant
The hired Legal Writing Instructor will be required to provide verification of the award of his/her J.D. degree, as documented by the receipt of an official transcript from the Registrar of their degree-granting institution to the Office of the Dean, School of Law.
