Job DescriptionThe Special Education Classroom Assistant is responsible for working with individual and/or small groups of students under the supervision of a certified teacher. Duties include modeling necessary skills, following educational and behavioral plans, and assisting students with special health care needs. Employees perform classroom support, lunchroom supervision, playground monitoring, and other related assignments.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the classroom teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
- Communicate with teachers and other district personnel to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
- Implement instructional programs and lesson plans (reading, math, language comprehension, writing, computer, etc.) for reinforcing learning concepts.
- Maintain classroom equipment and work area to ensure a safe learning environment and meet mandated requirements.
- Monitor students in various settings (rest rooms, playground, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, assemblies, field trips) to maintain safety and positivity.
- Promote good study habits and student independence to improve student outcomes.
- Provide instruction in individual and group activities (self-esteem, behavioral skills, daily living skills, etc.) to meet remediation goals.
- Document daily student activities (behavior, completed assignments, on/off-task times) for daily logs.
- Implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions.
- Model conversation, manners, clean-up activities, listening, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior.
- Monitor student schedules and behavior plans (class schedule, toileting, medication, appetite) for safety.
- Respond to emergencies (injured students, fights) to resolve safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel.
- Perform other related duties assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
- Assist staff in daily programming (social, academic, behavioral, self-help development).
- Supervise children in assigned programs (bus loading, classroom assignments, lunch, recess).
- Show understanding of students' disabilities; maintain a firm, courteous and fair approach.
- Load/unload wheelchair-bound students on the bus or wait with them for transportation.
- Participate in physical activities as part of the students’ basic program.
- Assist students in the restroom as necessary, including diaper changes.
- Demonstrate flexibility in schedule and activities throughout the day.
- Display cooperation, openness for growth, and willingness to contribute in a team approach.
- Communicate, collaborate, and cooperate with colleagues, supervisors, and students.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all aspects of work with special education children.
- Participate in all meetings, training programs, and in-service sessions as assigned by the building or district administrator.
- Perform any other duties directed by the building or district administrator.
Physical Requirements: The role requires some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 50 pounds. The employee must spend approximately 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing in a clean indoor environment, with 15% of work outside. The employee must also assist with students’ physical needs and adapt to a variety of conditions.
