Position Title: Reading/Literacy Coach

Job Description

Primary Function:
Improve student achievement by building teacher capacity through job-embedded professional development, including modeling, co-planning, and data-driven feedback. Serve as instructional leaders implementing evidence-based reading strategies and supporting a school-wide culture of literacy.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Holds a valid South Carolina teaching certificate and at least a bachelor's degree (master’s preferred).
  • Has the Read to Succeed Literacy Coach or Literacy Specialist endorsement.
  • Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in reading/literacy instruction and curriculum.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to analyze data and translate findings into effective instructional strategies.
  • Experience facilitating adult learning and professional development preferred.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Serve as a resource for professional development throughout the school in order to improve reading and literacy instruction and promote student achievement.
  • Earn add-on endorsements by completing the necessary courses or professional development for the add-on endorsement.
  • Support and provide ongoing professional development for teachers based on the analysis of student assessment data to promote differentiated instruction and intensive interventions for students when needed.
  • Work with all teachers in the school, including content area and elective areas, to promote literacy and student achievement.
  • Attend all required meetings as provided by the district Director of Elementary ELA.
  • Serve as a literacy resource for the principal/administrators of each school to promote literacy and increase student achievement by mentoring and coaching in the classrooms.
  • Promote effective strategies for teachers by modeling best practices with whole groups of students, small groups of students, or with individual students.
  • Facilitate study groups and lead and support grade level planning.
  • Support district efforts to provide courses to promote teacher effectiveness by:
    • Providing whole group and/or grade level instructional meetings
    • Conducting professional learning community meetings (PLC’s)
    • Collaborating with teachers to plan meetings to incorporate research-based practice into classrooms
    • Conducting literacy coaching sessions for individual teachers or grade levels
    • Observing classroom teachers to support best practices and to provide constructive feedback for teachers to improve literacy instruction and promote student achievement.
  • The reading/literacy coach may not be assigned a regular classroom teaching assignment or perform administrative functions that significantly deter from the primary role of providing professional development, mentoring/coaching teachers, improving literacy instruction, and improving student performance.
Evaluation

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of licensed personnel.
