Job Description and Position Requirements Camp Naturalists

Shaver’s Creek Camp naturalists use available resources, prior knowledge, and new ideas to create a lesson plan for their group each camp week. They provide support and leadership opportunities to assistant camp naturalists and Leaders-In-Training (“LITs,” who are teenage volunteers at camp), while ensuring the safety of everyone in the group. Prior experience with children (ideally informal or outdoor education experience) and a growth-oriented mindset are crucial for camp naturalist applicants.

This position is a daily blend of education, camp fun, and mentorship.

Details
  • Work 47-50 hours each week at the Shaver’s Creek facility.
  • Most hours are outdoors with children and peers on narrow dirt trails.
  • Bathroom access typically every 2-3 hours.
  • Carry gear (10-15 lbs) in backpack or provided pack.
  • Pay $11.50/hr for first 40 hours; overtime 1.5x.
  • Returning staff earn an additional $1/hr.
  • Housing may be available in limited rooms.
  • Training Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., first two weeks in June.
  • Training includes First Aid, CPR, AED, Epi-Pens, and camp operations.
  • Camp week schedule:
    Mon 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.;
    Tue-Thu 8:00 a.m. – 5:15 p.m.;
    Fri 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.;
    Sat 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.
  • Mid-season week over July 8, 2026 with off days Monday and Friday.
  • Commitment to full season June 1 – Aug 1 recommended; at minimum two full training weeks + three program weeks.
  • Ability to take optional time off for life events must be disclosed at interview.

Pre-Camp Employment Requirements (Mostly Remote)
  • Complete application process, interview, and accept offer.
  • Complete all required steps of hiring process.
  • Complete all required PSU training (e.g., child abuse reporting, COINS).
  • Read pre-training materials and staff manual.
  • Create personal wellness plan for summer.
  • Submit required forms by deadlines.
Responsibilities During Camp (All On-Site)
  • Ensure safety of all participants.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and campers.
  • Uphold PSU and Shaver’s Creek policies.
  • Lead as an engaged team member; create lesson plans with input from LITs.
  • Lead games, activities, songs, riddles, exploration exercises.
  • Set goals, track progress, and conduct check-ins.
  • Show appreciation (e.g., thank LITs weekly).
  • Maintain energy, engagement, patience for leadership style.
  • Provide medical treatment and maintain records.
  • Serve as “Super Naturalist” for up to one week assisting with behind-the-scenes logistics and observing teaching styles.
