Job Summary

To assume responsibility for the administration of the band program at assigned middle school by providing a quality music education program for students.

Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction to band students in a variety of performance opportunities including concert band, jazz ensemble, pep band, and other solo and small ensemble experiences. Effective performance practices are emphasized in concert, jazz, pep band and other appropriate venues.

    • Develop effective daily lesson plans using research‑based instructional strategies to maximize learning for all students.
    • Instruction is based on South Carolina Standards for Instrumental Music Education and district curriculum guides.
    • Work with the high school director(s) to create a consistent, comprehensive, and sequential 6‑12 curriculum.
    • Utilize an appropriate grading system consistent with district, school, and departmental expectations.
    • Create a safe and orderly environment with an effective classroom management plan.
    • Maintain a positive classroom environment encouraging individual and ensemble achievement.
  • Be responsible for performances of the assigned middle school bands:

    • Provide a minimum of two local public concerts during the school year.
    • Perform at appropriate on‑campus middle school events.
    • Play ceremonial music for school events, including the National Anthem and school songs.
    • With guidance from the principal, select a limited number of off‑campus performance experiences such as All County, Region, State Band auditions and clinics, State Concert Band Festival, and other appropriate activities.
  • Maintain appropriate and current records, including inventory of instruments, uniforms, music, and materials; correspondence; enrollment and instrumentation records; attendance, grades, registration; and financial records of school and booster club.

  • Develop plans for daily and extra‑curricular rehearsals to use student time efficiently and enhance skill acquisition.
  • Effectively communicate with administrators concerning band activities and seek guidance or permission as appropriate.
  • Develop, with the high school band director, and distribute an annual schedule of band events and activities to administrators, parents, and students.
  • Serve as the school’s liaison to any band booster club organized to support the middle school band.
  • Complete all school and district reports, surveys, and other paperwork within designated timelines.
  • Attend district staff meetings and events and maintain good communication with district administrators through principals.
  • Maintain band facilities in a clean and organized manner and keep parents, the public, and media apprised of band activities.
  • Support the instructional team by coordinating with middle and high school band and orchestra directors to plan and organize performances and events that address the needs of the total instrumental music program in grades 6–12.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive program to recruit new members for beginning bands each year.
  • Assume other responsibilities as necessary for the effective operation of the band program and any other responsibilities assigned by the principal.
