Associate Dean Performing Arts and Finance

SLCC’s Associate Deans are primarily responsible for shaping a division’s success, growth, and future. They have a direct influence over the professional growth and development of individual faculty and students. The work and effort of effective Associate Deans transcends routine management tasks. Associate Deans must clarify, communicate, and implement the department’s vision, mission, guiding principles, goals, and expectations. Acting as the primary spokesperson for assigned faculty and students, Associate Deans work with the College administration, peer institutions, the community, and prospective students in the critical areas of curriculum development, recruitment, and retention.

They must proactively facilitate professional teamwork among faculty members in order to achieve the desired vision and mission as the best skills, knowledge, and attitudes of faculty are implemented in a collective effort to achieve that end. Because of the impact of their leadership, Associate Deans must be carefully selected, trained, and mentored as they accomplish this crucial role.

The AD for the Performing Arts and Finance Division of the Gail Miller Business School, under minimal supervision, performs complex assignments and fulfills broad responsibilities related to program review, curriculum development, purchasing, coordination of faculty teaching schedules, synchronization of class activities for budgetary efficiencies, budget management, and efficient use of instructional space.

This position is at-will.

• Provide leadership, support, and supervision for department or division faculty and staff.
• Must have the ability to work in a team setting, be innovative, collaborative, and flexible. Ability to manage the department or division in compliance with SLCC’s policies, procedures, guidelines, and direction.
• Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and excellent computer skills
• Help the division faculty establish an appropriate vision and appropriate goals that have a clear tie to SLCC’s mission, and coordinate efforts to achieve those goals. Including the ethical, critical, and responsible use of emerging AI technologies and practices and ADA accessibility standards.
• Coordinate department/division faculty and staff efforts to achieve goals aligned with the SLCC’s mission and strategic plan.
• Ability to address faculty, staff, and student issues in a positive manner at the department or division level and in collaboration with other college departments, divisions, and administrators.
• Ability to meet deadlines.
• Commitment to keep the College accessible to a diverse urban population and ability to promote cultural, economic, and ethnic diversity and the ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
• Demonstrated understanding of the role of an administrator in both career-technical education programs and transfer programs.
• Ability to work with program faculty to ensure that programs of study provide opportunities for students to develop the skill set required for career advancement.
• Demonstrated understanding of assessing performance, ability to lead a collaborative effort, understanding of academic systems and culture in a post-secondary educational environment, and the ability of creating a shared vision.
• Demonstrated evidence of effective change management.
• Experience with effective budgeting.
• Ability to work effectively in a large, complex community college characterized by diversity in its many forms among students, staff, and faculty.
