The School of the Earth, Ocean, and Environment (SEOE) in the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus invites applications for a full-time, nine-month tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor in fish ecology, to begin August 16, 2027.

We seek an outstanding individual to establish a nationally recognized, externally funded research program in fish ecology. This position will complement existing strengths in theoretical and applied marine science research across the SEOE, the Baruch Institute, and the Department of Biological Sciences. We are especially interested in applicants with research interests in fish and fisheries-related areas, including (but not limited to) fish biology and ecology;

population and community dynamics and modeling; and fisheries management and conservation. Methods employed may include or combine theoretical, observational, and experimental approaches, as well as large-scale, data-driven analyses. Candidates will be expected to establish an independent, extramurally funded research program in fish ecology and to advise and mentor student researchers. The teaching load will be one course per regular semester (1:1), which may include an undergraduate course for non-science majors, an undergraduate course for SEOE majors, and a graduate-level course.

Potential courses may include any of the research areas mentioned above, depending on the candidate’s area of expertise. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to faculty committee service within the SEOE.

Applicants at the Assistant rank must hold a Ph.D. in ecology, marine science, or a related discipline; have at least two years of research experience by the appointment start date; and show potential for excellence in teaching. Applicants for the Associate rank must also have 6 years of relevant research experience; some teaching experience; and provide evidence of a strong, sustained record of research funding and publications.

The SEOE is a multidisciplinary unit within the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences offering degrees in marine science, geological science, environmental science, and environmental studies. The unit comprises approximately 600 undergraduate students, over 60 graduate students, and 40 faculty members whose research spans the natural, physical, and social sciences. The SEOE houses excellent analytical facilities, including Stable Isotope Laboratories, Radioisotope & Marine Sediments Laboratory, and the Center for Elemental Mass Spectrometry.

A seawater facility/wet lab is also located on the main campus in Columbia. The successful candidate will be encouraged to use the research infrastructure available at the Baruch Marine Field Laboratory and the North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, which provide unparalleled facilities and access to near-pristine ecosystems at the edge of the North Inlet Estuary and adjacent Winyah Bay estuary.
