Job Description

We approach problems with creativity and innovation. The Columbia office of Schnabel is seeking an environmental scientist or engineer to join our team of multi-disciplinary professionals. We are looking for a motivated candidate able to learn quickly, with a desire to develop both field and analytical skills, and a desire to be part of a strong team.

Job Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and collect field data working within a project team environment;
  • Participate in OSHA 40-hr HAZWOPER training, other task-specific training, and site-specific safety training;
  • Collect water, soil and air samples in accordance with field training and procedures;
  • Use, maintain, and troubleshoot groundwater sampling equipment including peristaltic pumps, bladder pumps, submersible pumps and water quality meters.
  • Observe drilling activities related to sampling including soil/rock logging, direct push technology, and installation of monitoring wells;
  • Use, maintain, and troubleshoot other field equipment including handheld GPS devices, 4-gas meters, FIDs, PIDs and related equipment;
  • Use, maintain, and troubleshoot Aggressive Fluid Vapor Recovery (AFVR) mobile remedial equipment for petroleum releases.
  • Manage samples for laboratory analyses including labelling, preservation, custody documentation and shipping/transport;
  • Perform delegated office assignments from project managers related to data compilation, assessment and report preparation;
  • Perform field and office assignments related to Phase I and Phase II Environmental Assessment, asbestos and lead-based paint surveys, groundwater investigations; and environmental compliance monitoring.
  • Summarize and interpret environmental data within maps and tables; and
  • Perform technical writing and preparation of technical regulatory reports;
Required Skills/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Geology or Environmental Engineering is preferred, or:
  • 0-3 years of professional experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Mechanical-minded; enjoys field work and working with hands.
  • Strong work ethic and a desire for continual self-improvement
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Willingness and ability to perform outdoor field work, work outside of normal business hours, and overnight travel; and
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds and be physically able to negotiate construction sites, enter trenches, climb ladders, and work outside.
Desired Skills/Experience
  • Prior internship or professional work in a related field (i.e. water sampling, field documentation, laboratory analysis, etc.)
  • 40-hr HAZWOPER or other OSHA certifications
  • Licensed Asbestos and Lead-Based Paint Inspector is highly sought

The compensation range for this position is between $57,200 to $86,000. Compensation for this position may vary based on geographic location and other factors. We remain committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation to all employees, regardless of their location.
