Overview

Job responsibilities include serving as the Roadway Design Support Engineer and overseeing and administering the functions and duties of Roadway Design Support, including Roadway Design Quality Assurance, Roadway Design Policies, and Active Transportation Design. The role supervises the general office and administrative responsibilities of Roadway Design Support, ensuring accountability to RPG's, other sections of the Department, other Agencies, and the general public through various communication methods.

The position researches and gathers information pertaining to roadway design topics to assist with the development and revisions of Department guidelines, policies, and procedures. It maintains the Roadway Design Manual and coordinates periodic updates. It assists with training Department and Consultant personnel on engineering topics related to roadway design. It coordinates with in-house and consultant designers to ensure adequate engineering guidance is provided in Department guidelines, policies, and procedures.

It represents Roadway Design Support on various technical committees and on consultant selection committees. It supervises staff, including preparing performance planning and evaluation documents and related personnel paperwork. It provides professional engineering services to support the Legal Section in cases involving the Department. It coordinates with in-house and consultant designers to ensure adequate engineering guidance is provided in Department guidelines, policies, and procedures.

It represents Roadway Design Support on various technical committees and on consultant selection committees. It coordinates with Design Automation to ensure roadway construction plans accurately reflect engineering design consistency. It performs other related duties as required.

Responsibilities
  • Serves as the Roadway Design Support Engineer.
  • Oversees and administers the functions and duties of Roadway Design Support including Roadway Design Quality Assurance, Roadway Design Policies, and Active Transportation Design.
  • Supervises the general office and administrative responsibilities of Roadway Design Support and ensures they are responsible to the RPG's, other sections of the Department, other Agencies, and the general public through personal contact, telephone, Internet, E-Mail, and letters.
  • Researches and gathers information pertaining to roadway design topics to assist with the development and revisions of Department guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintains the Roadway Design Manual and coordinates periodic updates.
  • Assists with the training of Department and Consultant personnel on engineering topics related to roadway design.
  • Coordinates with in-house and consultant designers to ensure adequate engineering guidance is provided In Department guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Represents Roadway Design Support on various technical committees and on consultant selection committees.

Minimum And Additional Requirements
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering and eight (8) years of engineering work experience.
  • Necessary Special Requirement:
    Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer by the South Carolina State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors.
  • A valid motor vehicle operator's license required.
  • The physical demands for the essential functions involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. May require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal business hours or respond to emergency situations.
