Our client, a well-known forensic engineering firm, is seeking a highly analytical Civil/Structural Engineer to support its growing forensic engineering practice. This role focuses on investigating structural failures, construction defects, property damage, and building performance issues to determine cause and origin.
The Civil/Structural Engineer will conduct site inspections, perform technical analysis, evaluate code compliance, and prepare clear, defensible written reports for insurance carriers, attorneys, and private clients. The position requires strong engineering fundamentals, professional judgment, and the ability to communicate complex technical findings in a concise and credible manner.
This role blends field investigation, structural analysis, technical writing, and client interaction. The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, highly organized, and capable of operating independently while maintaining high documentation standards. The position reports to firm leadership and plays a meaningful role in supporting both technical excellence and client confidence.
Absolute Minimum Must-Have’s / Experience / Requirements:Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural or Mechanical Engineering required
- 8+ years of structural engineering experience
- Experience in building design, construction, structural analysis, or related field
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required. South Carolina license preferred or ability to obtain through reciprocity.
- Strong understanding of:
- Wood, steel, concrete, and masonry structural systems
- Foundation systems and soil-structure interaction
- Wind and environmental loading
- Construction sequencing and common failure modes
- Building code interpretation
- Prior forensic engineering experience
- Experience supporting insurance claim investigations
- Deposition or expert testimony experience
- Familiarity with structural analysis software
- Residential and commercial construction experience
- Conduct forensic site inspections involving structural damage, foundation movement, construction defects, storm damage, and material failures
- Analyze structural systems to determine cause and origin of failure or distress
- Review architectural and structural drawings, specifications, and construction documentation
- Evaluate compliance with applicable building codes and industry standards
- Prepare clear, concise, and defensible engineering reports
- Develop practical repair recommendations when appropriate
- Communicate findings effectively to insurance representatives, attorneys, and clients
- Provide deposition or expert testimony when required
- Maintain organized case documentation and timelines
- Uphold professional standards in high-visibility or adversarial environments
- Successfully integrated into firm methodology and reporting standards
- Independently managing assigned cases
- Producing reports requiring minimal revision
- Demonstrating sound, defensible engineering conclusions
- Establishing credibility with internal leadership and clients
- Fully autonomous case management
- Consistent delivery of high-quality forensic reports
- Active participation in complex case analysis
