Position: Transportation Engineer/ Trans. Eng. Assoc. III - Assistant Resident Maintenance Engineer (61035191)

Job Responsibilities

Serves as the Assistant Resident Maintenance Engineer (ARME). Supervises the Resident Maintenance Foreman and maintenance personnel, including repair shop equipment and materials on projects and routine maintenance operations to ensure a safe roadway for the traveling public in Anderson County. Interviews, hires, coaches, and disciplines employees as necessary. Prepares EPMS for the Resident Maintenance Foreman and acts as the reviewing officer on foreman reviews.

Assists the Resident Maintenance Engineer in investigating public complaints and damage claims, and recommends payment or denial. Monitors crew progress to ensure work orders are completed timely and that maintenance work meets Department guidelines, policies, and directives. Supports the Resident Maintenance Engineer with complex highway construction activities on primary and secondary roadways, preparing cost estimates, correspondence, and reports. Assists in compiling and preparing data for the resurfacing program, CTC and State (Federal and Non-Federal Aid) resurfacing, and represents the Department at local County Transportation Committee and other public or governmental meetings as required.

Inspects all SCDOT facilities and properties in Anderson County, including right-of-way, shop yards, office buildings, rest area buildings and grounds, storage buildings, and section sheds. Handles necessary repairs immediately by contacting appropriate personnel. Works with businesses and private citizens to remove unauthorized (illegal) signs from highway right-of-way, including inspections, notifications, and follow-up. Assists in management review of progress toward the business plan in accordance with the Director of Maintenance’s goals.

Prepares, monitors, and updates the Drainage Plan to ensure proposed roadways are ready for paving, and the Sign Plan to ensure all SCDOT roadways have updated high‑intensity signs per current EDM, with no sign older than ten years. Compiles information for maintenance project submissions. Responds to emergency calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week, supervises staff during emergencies and inclement weather operations, and ensures accurate monthly mileage reports are submitted timely.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and three (3) years of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. The physical demands for the essential functions involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods. This position may require occasional travel and occasional bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, or kneeling.

Walking for extended periods, traversing rough terrain, working close to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards may be required. The position may also require working outside normal business hours or responding to emergency situations.
