Overview
The Hampton Roads Connector Partners JV (HRCP) – consisting of Flatiron, Dragados USA and VINCI – has been selected to construct the $3.3 BN Design‑Build project, the largest civil construction contract ever awarded by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The project spans a 9‑mile section of I‑64 and includes a new 3.5‑mile bridge‑tunnel crossing, replacement of existing marine approach bridges, and addition of a third lane in each direction.
Two 45‑ft diameter 1.5‑mile tunnels will be bored by a TBM, creating the second largest TBM tunnel opening in North America. The project is expected to continue through the end of 2026.
The CAD Technician will support the methods engineers and wider engineering and construction teams with AutoCAD and Revit drafting activities, contributing to innovative, value‑for‑money designs guided by industry‑leading safety and sustainability commitments.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare 2D drawings in AutoCAD and 3D models in Revit for construction sequences, site installation drawings, RC detailed drawings for temporary structures, steel working platforms, formworks, shoring, and scaffolding.
- Produce excavation drawings and extract cut/fill quantities.
- Perform quantity take‑offs and prepare Bill of Quantities.
- Control drawings of proprietary formwork systems received from external suppliers and adapt or modify them to suit site conditions.
- Adhere to the project quality plan and procedures, providing the document controller with the necessary information for upload on the Document Management System.
- Maintain a shared library of blocks and external references with other team members.
- Engage regularly with other department members (construction, survey, design) to understand requirements and translate them into appropriate CAD actions.
- Assist the document controller with drawing register information, ensuring the latest revisions are available through the Electronic Document Management System.
- Dynamic and challenging work environment involving maintenance and repair of heavy machinery, ensuring efficient operation, and adherence to safety protocols on construction sites.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, and reflective vests when on site.
- Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
- Walk and stand while in office or on site.
- Occasional climbing on and off equipment and bending to inspect.
- Degree in civil engineering.
- 5+ years of experience in a similar CAD drafting role.
- Strong experience with AutoCAD and Revit; excellent proficiency in 2D drawings.
- Solid knowledge of formwork and scaffolding systems.
- Good understanding of construction methodologies and temporary works design, with experience in structural construction works, particularly bridges.
- Previous experience working in a contractor technical team on large infrastructure projects.
- Ability to assume responsibility, interface, and communicate effectively with others.
- Broad knowledge of personnel safety, process safety, and environmental principles and regulations.
- Fluent in English with professional proficiency.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and Sketch Up.
- Experience with 3D modelling.
