Job Description
WSP is hiring a Full‑Time Early Career Bridge Inspection Engineer – Assistant Team Leader to support our Southeast Bridge Inspection Team across select offices in North and South Carolina and Virginia.
Responsibilities- Inspect bridges throughout the Southeast, identifying deterioration and structural damage to protect public safety and maintain roadway systems.
- Prepare complete, accurate, and concise bridge inspection reports using electronic systems, drawings, and field notes.
- Assist in planning field inspection trips and maintain field equipment and supplies.
- Engage with a variety of bridge types, gaining experience in design progression, aging infrastructure, and repair methods.
- Perform engineering calculations and provide entry‑level technical assistance on bridge repair designs, load ratings, and construction inspections.
- Comply with safety guidelines and site‑specific procedures to ensure correct execution of work.
- Act responsibly and ethically regarding company resources, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
- Support additional duties as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Familiarity with civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
- Strong self‑discipline, attention to detail, and ability to multitask in a dynamic work environment.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
- Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Physical ability to perform field work, including climbing ladders up to 40 ft, carrying gear, and working in adverse weather.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools.
- Willingness to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek, including occasional travel or overnight stays.
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- Ability to work in the United States immediately.
- Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
- Prior internship, leadership experience, or relevant coursework.
- Ability to read plans and specifications to provide entry‑level technical assistance on bridge repair designs and construction inspections.
- Experience with drafting software such as AutoCAD or Micro Station.
- Experience with engineering calculation software (e.g., AASHTO Bridge Rating (BrR), Mathcad, SAP
2000). - Interest in UAS drone operation.
- Comfortable working at heights (40 ft+) and interest in ropes work (SPRAT certification).
- Enjoyment of outdoor work and exploring diverse bridge sites.
