The City of Cayce Utilities Department is seeking a skilled and dedicated Licensed Water Treatment Plant Operator to help provide safe, high-quality drinking water to our community. This position plays a critical role in operating and maintaining the City’s water treatment facility while ensuring compliance with all state and federal drinking water regulations.
Position Overview: Under limited direct supervision, the Licensed Water Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for monitoring, operating, and maintaining the City’s water purification plant. This position oversees treatment processes, performs water quality testing, maintains treatment equipment, and ensures compliance with all applicable environmental and public health standards.
Key Responsibilities- Operate and monitor the City’s water treatment plant and related systems.
- Serve as the operator in charge of assigned shifts and maintain required operational records.
- Determine and adjust chemical dosages to ensure proper water treatment and regulatory compliance.
- Conduct water quality and process control testing.
- Operate the SCADA system and maintain accurate operating logs and treatment records.
- Add treatment chemicals and oversee the treatment and disposal of alum sludge.
- Perform preventative maintenance and assist with repairs to pumps, motors, compressors, and other plant equipment.
- Collect potable water samples from treatment facilities, storage tanks, and distribution system locations.
- Monitor gauges, meters, charts, chemical feed systems, and storage tanks.
- Change filters, flush water lines, adjust process flows, and perform routine plant operations.
- Handle and replace chlorine cylinders and safely manage treatment chemicals.
- Maintain compliance with all Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) regulations.
- Perform general housekeeping and upkeep of treatment plant facilities.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Vocational, technical, or specialized training in water treatment, environmental sciences, utilities, or a related field.
- Valid South Carolina Driver's License.
- South Carolina Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification (Class A, B, C, D, or E, depending on qualifications and facility requirements).
- At least one year of experience in water treatment plant operations or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Advanced South Carolina Water Treatment Operator certifications.
- Experience operating SCADA systems and computerized treatment controls.
- Experience with laboratory testing, process control analysis, and regulatory reporting.
- Knowledge of EPA and SCDES drinking water regulations and compliance requirements.
- Mechanical aptitude and experience troubleshooting treatment plant equipment.
- Climbing stairs, ladders, and elevated structures, including treatment equipment and plant facilities.
- Working around chemicals, treatment processes, machinery, and industrial equipment.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, confined spaces, and utility operations.
- Lifting and carrying equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Safely handling treatment chemicals and wearing required personal protective equipment.
Successful candidates must be able to pass respiratory protection requirements, including spirometer and respirator fit testing.
