Inspects assigned contractors work to ensure that work is in accordance with the plans, contract, SCDOT Standard Specifications, and Standard Drawings. Performs work in specialized areas of asphalt, earthwork, and foundations.
Completes traffic control and erosion control inspections and associated reports.
Obtains samples and certifications of materials to submit to the laboratory for testing and acceptance; inputs sample and certification data in Site Manager.
Reviews sampling requirements and test results to ensure that adequate samples have been obtained to represent materials used during construction.
Performs office work involving engineering data as well as compiling quantities, preparing reports and as‑built construction plans.
Monitors contractor and department personnel staking of construction items; checks contractors staking for accuracy and makes necessary changes in a timely manner.
Performs topographical surveys on material pits and computes quantities for payout.
Computes grades for all types of bridge and roadway construction plans.
Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours and/or 12‑hour shifts.
QualificationsA bachelor’s degree in engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Employee must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
Physical DemandsThe physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel. It may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. It requires driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. The position may require working outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental‑related emergencies.
The position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
