Overview

Columbia nonprofit organization seeking qualified Assistant Treasurer to join their team. The Assistant Treasurer provides essential support to the Treasurer in managing the organization’s financial records, transactions, and reporting. This role involves assisting with the management of day-to-day financial operations, maintaining accurate records, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures. The Assistant Treasurer serves as a trusted steward of funds and contributes to the overall mission of the organization by ensuring responsible financial practices.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in accounting or finance, including:
  • Preparation of financial statements
  • Experience with audits
  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of accounting software, a plus
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Understanding of and commitment to the organizations policies
  • Must pass background checks and drug screening
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Financial Recordkeeping & Transactions
  • Assist the Treasurer and the Finance Assistant with weekly and monthly financial transactions, including deposits, disbursements, and data entry.
  • Record and maintain accurate financial records in the accounting system.
  • Assist in maintaining current vendor information and financial agreements.
Cash & Bank Management
  • Assist with daily banking activities, including deposits and electronic transactions.
  • Assist with verifying and recording bank charges and earnings on accounts.
  • Assist in reconciling bank statements and monitoring account balances.
  • Prepare and assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports (e.g., income statements, balance sheets, cash flow reports).
  • Generate individual giving statements and reports as requested by the Treasurer.
  • Assist with compiling data for the annual financial report.
Compliance and Audit
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with financial regulations, IRS guidelines, and organization policies.
  • Help prepare documentation and reports for internal and external audits.
Administrative and Departmental Support
  • Provide administrative support to the Treasurer, including managing financial files, answering finance-related inquiries, and helping prepare reports for committees or leadership.
  • Assist with reviewing payroll reports.
  • Support the annual stewardship and budgeting process.
  • Assist with special financial projects and initiatives as directed.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Strong understanding of accounting and auditing principles
  • Previous experience in finance, bookkeeping, or a related role
  • Familiarity with financial software (e.g., Quick Books) is desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge of financial compliance and risk management
  • Strong analytical and data analysis capabilities
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills through verbal, written, and electronic means
  • High level of attention to detail
  • High level of confidentiality and trustworthiness
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within team to assess needs and produce results
  • Able to develop and maintain positive and effective relationships with a wide variety of people with varying social, theological, and intellectual sensitivities, inside and outside the congregation
  • Uses diplomacy and tact and manages conflict appropriately; is approachable
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and commitment to mission and values of organization
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
  • Collaborates closely with the Treasurer, Finance Assistant, Executive Director of Finance and Administrative Services, Finance Committee, and staff
  • Maintains positive relationships with financial institutions and vendors
  • Provide backup coverage to the Treasurer and Finance Assistant when needed
