This position is located in the Office of Financial Regulation and Solvency/Examinations.
Under the direction of the Chief Financial Examiner, the Lead Financial Examiner (Audits Manager I) serves as a senior-level technical resource responsible for planning, conducting, and reviewing financial examinations of domestic insurers, both Traditional and Captive, as well as HMOs, to ensure compliance with South Carolina insurance statutes, regulations, and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Examiners Handbook and Accounting Guidance.
Using NAIC guidance, the Lead Financial Examiner:
- Plans and conducts financial examinations in accordance with established Department procedures and NAIC guidelines.
- Interprets State laws, regulations, and NAIC guidelines.
- Prepares and follows detailed examination work plans and ensures accurate workpaper documentation.
- Reviews and approves examination work papers prepared by other examiners and Examiner in Charge (EIC) as directed.
- Provides professional and technical advice to top agency management based on examination findings.
- Confers with company representatives and Department leadership regarding examination results.
- Develops recommendations for regulatory action.
- Bachelor's degree in mathematics, accounting, insurance, business administration, or economics, with at least 18 hours of accounting required.
- Prior auditing experience at a CPA firm OR
- Prior insurance regulatory experience that included leading examination teams OR
- Prior experience performing lead or review responsibilities for examination or audit teams.
- Certified Financial Examiner (CFE) designation required at the time of hire or within designated timeframe determined by the Department.
One or more of the following preferred:
- CPA designation
- Master's degree in accounting
Utilization of Team Mate software for examination work.
