Responsibilities of the Sector Fire Management Officer
Under general supervision, exercise responsibilities for the enforcement of state and federal laws primarily related to forestry, agriculture, wildlife, outdoor burning, litter and DHEC smoke regulations; conduct criminal or administrative investigations. Perform wildland fire protection duties and supervise wildland fire suppression teams.
- Respond to calls to prevent crime and enforce laws. Protect states' natural resources. Perform and conduct forestry law enforcement. Investigate wildland fires to determine cause and damages.
- Perform wildland fire prevention work. Perform wildland fire control planning and direct fire suppression activities. Ensure that preventive maintenance goals are met.
- Recruit, train and supervise a fire suppression team. Ensure that the Employee Performance Management System (EPMS) planning stages and evaluations are completed within the agency's policy/procedures.
- Perform administrative duties including review of monthly forest fire activity reports. Assist agency foresters in the preparation and implementation of forest management plans, reforestation, or other landowner services. Coordinate the provision of services for fee to landowners within the sector. Provide technical assistance to local governments on forestry issues. Stay current with state and local affairs affecting forestry. Work cooperatively with local governments to promote forestry and sound forestry practices.
Participate in allied forestry organizations' activities. - Participate in activities in support of the agency's mission and goals, and perform other related duties as required.
- A high school diploma and two years' experience in forest fire control, forestry management, or law enforcement.
- Must pass the initial physical fitness test of walking two (2) miles in 30 minutes carrying a 25 lb. pack or meet the agency's physical fitness program requirements.
- Must obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal.
- Criminal background check required. Pre‑employment drug and alcohol test required.
- Position requires a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Must have a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) prior to employment. Must complete CDL Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) Theory training within 15 working days of hire and obtain a Commercial Driver's License within 90 working days. To obtain your Commercial Learner’s Permit, you must take the official written test at any SCDMV branch.

Physical Requirements
- This position works primarily in Saluda, Edgefield, and McCormick Counties, but will be required to work outside of these counties as needed. Must be a resident of South Carolina and must live in their area of responsibility or within a radius of 30 miles of their assigned work center.
- Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing environmental conditions.
- Works a Monday‑Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. schedule. Job requires on‑call duty and weekend work. Overnight travel required to include extensive periods of time (up to 18 days) on large fire or all‑hazard incidents in or out of the state.
- Must have knowledge of the assigned area and operation of fire control equipment. Knowledge of SC Forest Fire Laws and law enforcement practices and procedures. Knowledge of SCFC forest management programs, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to act effectively in emergency or stressful situations. Ability to plan, direct and evaluate the work of subordinates. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- This position requires the employee to be subject to random, post‑incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug‑Free Workplace‑CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing policy. This position is designated as essential and safety sensitive.
