Responsibilities
Under regular supervision, you will respond to fire emergencies, rescues, hazardous material incidents, and medical calls occurring on a military installation. You will perform 24‑hour standby for fire suppression and rescue operations under conditions that can be extremely stressful and dangerous. You will operate fire apparatus and related equipment, perform preventive maintenance on vehicles, tools, protective clothing, and other assigned equipment, and participate in required training and evaluation exercises.
You will provide medical assistance at the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) level or higher and, in the absence of a Senior Fire Officer, assume command of the emergency scene until relieved. Additional duties will be assigned by higher fire authorities.
- High school diploma, Firefighter I/II training certifications (IFSAC or Pro Board), Pump Operations I, and Emergency Vehicle Driver’s Training (EVDT) certifications.
- Valid South Carolina state driver’s license (or obtain one within 45 days of employment if holding an out‑of‑state license).
- Certification at the Firefighter II skill level from a federal or state equivalent fire training school.
- Basic knowledge of fire apparatus operations and driving skills; meet NFPA 1002 (Fire Apparatus Drive/Operator Qualifications) within six months of employment.
- Basic working knowledge of Hazardous Materials Operations and First‑Aid techniques.
- Broad knowledge of structural firefighting and rescue techniques; knowledge of fire prevention procedures and practices.
- Ability to perform assigned duties and lift 100 lbs. up to six feet high.
- Continued employment contingent on passing a Firefighter Physical based on NFPA 1500 standards, passing a drug test, and passing a background check.
- Possibility to obtain National Security Clearance at the “Secret” level if required.
- Availability to work 24/7 emergency services with three (7)‑person shifts, 24 hrs on/off, an average 53‑hour work week, and 106‑hour scheduled pay period.
- Ability to work with individuals of different gender and race.
Must maintain a working knowledge of fire apparatus operations and meet NFPA 1002 standards within six months of employment.
