Job Summary

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences (ENHS) at the University of South Carolina (USC) Arnold School of Public Health (ASPH) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate Professor, or Full Professor focused on Environmental Exposure and Human Health to investigate relationships between exposures and health outcomes to address 21st century environmental issues affecting both ecosystem and human health.

This position is part of a USC campus-wide Environmental Health Cluster Initiative, a strategic effort to expand the University’s leadership in advancing research, clinical care, and educational excellence in environmental health. The cluster will broaden expertise across disciplines to foster innovation and address the complexity of environmental health challenges through multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary scholarship that better connects ENHS with Epidemiology and Community Engagement that tests interventions strategies to mitigate or reduce health challenges within communities.

This Environmental Exposure and Human Health position will specifically focus on assessing the impact of exposure to chemical, physical, and biological stressors on ecosystem and human health, developing predictive models that translate identified adverse effects into informative population model predictions which can be further tested and studied in association with major global environmental issues such as extreme weather, pollution and other environmental stressors.

We seek an individual whose research focuses on a variety of contemporary environmental health science issues such as contaminants of emerging concern as well as emerging infectious diseases. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a robust, extramurally funded research program in implementation science applied to environmental health, to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching (in-person and online), and to mentor master’s and doctoral students.

The candidate will also be expected to collaborate across disciplines, especially within the Environmental Health Cluster, to accelerate solutions that improve community and population health.

Our faculty work collaboratively with environmental agencies, industry and vulnerable communities to create public health implementation science strategies which include community-based education and research that translates scientific findings into co-created interventions which become effective policy, making this position well aligned with departmental strengths. USC also provides a rich interdisciplinary environment, with faculty across the Arnold School and campus contributing to initiatives such as the Global Health Initiative, Nutrition Consortium, Prevention Research Center, Office for the Study of Aging, Consortium for Latino Health Studies, Big Data Health Science Center, and Smart State Centers.

The University has been designated by the Carnegie Foundation as a “doctoral institution with highest research activity” and a “community-engaged institution.” The Department also supports an undergraduate and graduate teaching mission, participating in the Arnold School’s undergraduate programs and the MPH, MS and PhD graduate programs.

ENHS has a strong history of competitive NSF, NOAA and NIH research funding on extreme weather, community monitoring of wastewater, antibiotic resistance, microplastics, forest fire impacts related to extreme weather, contact recreation and seafood safety forecast modeling and research translation tools for at risk communities.
