Job SummaryThe surgical technologist works under the supervision of the registered nurse and medical staff to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and minimally invasive surgical procedures. They ensure a safe operating room environment, proper equipment function, and conditions that maximize patient safety. They combine sterile technique with knowledge of anatomy and surgical procedures to support the physician.

- Training: Completion of a recognized vocational or hospital‑based Operating Room Technician course or equivalent
- Performs assigned patient care tasks under the direction of a Registered Nurse and the surgeon.
- Assesses and anticipates needed supplies for scheduled and emergent procedures, including comfort and safety measures for patients.
- Prepares the operating room for a particular surgical procedure with assistance from other personnel.
- Exercises proper sterile technique, opens and arranges the sterile field according to protocol.
- Utilizes equipment and supplies efficiently, charges for and assures replacement of medical and surgical supplies; restocks and inventories supplies.
- Displays dexterity in the use of surgical instruments and knowledge of the step‑by‑step process for each procedure.
- Assists in performing and documenting equipment, drug and environmental checks.
- Follows infection control policies and procedures, including decontamination and sterilization of instrumentation.
- Assists in patient positioning, operative site preparation, draping, and anesthesia support as needed.
- Performs duties under the surgeon’s direction such as holding retractors, suction, clamping vessels, and applying dressings.
- Assists in moving the patient to recovery and in clearing the operating room for the next procedure.
- Participates in instrument counts with the circulating nurse.
- Collaborates with the Associate Care Manager/Registered Nurse to update the nursing plan of care and recommend interventions.
- Evaluates and updates surgeon preference cards and notifies personnel of changes.
- Labels drugs on the field, prepares labels and verifies specimens according to protocol.
- Maintains proper documentation related to sterilization procedures and instrument count sheets.
- Identifies educational needs for self and participates in peer review.
- Precepts new staff and students, sharing knowledge of procedures.
- Coordinates treatments and procedures for cost‑effective patient care.
- Collaborates with HCTM’s for acquisition of supplies and equipment.
- Reports malfunctioning equipment, maintains instrumentation, and addresses patient safety matters.
- Communicates patient information to the Associate Care Manager/Registered Nurse.
- Answer telephone with proper etiquette, posts cases for surgeons, takes and relays messages.
- Acts as liaison to sterile processing and participates in performance improvement activities.
- Contributes to development and revision of standards and policies as needed.
- Utilizes information from monitors and research to effect practice changes.
- Maintains knowledge of emergency protocols in the operating room.
- Ensures hazardous waste is properly managed and receives RCRA training.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
- Certified Surgical Technologists with additional education or training may function as first/surgical assistants during robotic procedures where fully trained assistants are unavailable; privileges are based on training review.
