HISTOLOGY TECHNICIAN, MOHS

CRD-HR-AD-001

About the practice

Collo Rosso Dermatology, PC is a new solo dermatology practice serving Chapin and the Lake Murray community. The founding physician is board certified in dermatology, dermatopathology, and Mohs micrographic surgery, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and the College of American Pathologists. We expect to begin seeing patients in interim clinical space in fall 2026 and to open our permanent facility at 306 Lexington Avenue in early 2027.

The planned facility includes an in‑house, high complexity dermatopathology laboratory. The practice intends to perform Mohs histology and routine dermatopathology processing in house when the laboratory is operational, subject to licensure, certification, accreditation, and clinical needs. The physician will interpret the slides. The practice is pursuing first‑time accreditation by the College of American Pathologists.

The role

We are hiring a histology technician to help establish and operate the histology bench under the laboratory director and technical supervisor. On surgery days, you will prepare Mohs frozen sections while the patient waits. On other days, you will process routine permanent sections, maintain instruments, and complete the quality records required for laboratory operations and accreditation.

The role begins part time during the buildout. Full‑time work is expected to be available when the laboratory opens, and continued part‑time work may also be available. The role may later support an affiliated reference laboratory, subject to its separate licensure, certification, policies, and supervision.

We value careful work, candor, and teamwork. We will consider an experienced general histology technician who needs training on Mohs frozen sections.

Because the laboratory is still being built, the person hired will have an opportunity to provide practical input on equipment selection, bench layout, workflow, and procedures.

What you will do Mohs frozen sections
  • Receive fresh tissue from the surgeon, and ink and orient margins under the surgeon’s direction
  • Freeze, embed, and section tissue on the cryostat to diagnostic quality
  • Stain, coverslip, and mount slides for immediate review, using H and E and toluidine blue
  • Work to a stage turnaround that keeps the patient moving, typically in the range of fifteen to thirty minutes
  • Communicate directly with the surgeon about section quality, tissue orientation, and any problem with a block
Routine histology
  • Provide accessioning and grossing support, fixation, and processing of routine specimens within assigned duties
  • Embedding, microtomy, and H and E staining of paraffin sections
  • Special stains, and immunohistochemistry as the laboratory adds it
  • Slide and block filing, retention, and retrieval
Laboratory operations
  • Cryostat, microtome, processor, and stainer operation, cleaning, and preventive maintenance
  • Reagent preparation, inventory, and supply ordering
  • Quality control documentation, instrument logs, temperature logs, and corrective action records
  • Safety, hazardous waste handling, and formaldehyde monitoring
  • Contributing to written standard operating procedures for the laboratory
  • Participate in competency assessment as required by the laboratory director and applicable standards
During the buildout, before opening
  • Reviewing and recommending capital equipment against the practice’s volume and workflow
  • Advising on bench layout, ventilation, plumbing, and storage
  • Helping draft the laboratory’s procedures and records before the first specimen arrives
What we are looking for Required
  • For any assigned high complexity testing, eligibility under an applicable pathway in 42 C.F.R. 493.1489, as verified and documented by the laboratory director before testing begins. In your application, identify the education, training, experience, or other regulatory pathway you rely on.
  • Hands‑on histology laboratory experience, including embedding and microtomy
  • Careful, consistent work under time pressure, and the judgment to say when a section is not good enough
  • Comfort with documentation. In an accredited laboratory, work that is not recorded did not happen
  • Ability to work…
