Job Summary
Prepares and processes tissue samples for routine histologic procedures, including fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining, for examination under a microscope. Must maintain accurate records, clean instruments, and comply with laboratory safety and universal precautions.
Responsibilities- Receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures.
- Accessioning, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining of human and animal tissues.
- Maintains accurate tissue and slide records.
- Cleans and maintains instruments and work areas.
- Complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety.
- Must stand, sit, and walk continuously; must climb stairs infrequently.
- Must work indoors, outdoors in temperature extremes infrequently, and from elevated areas frequently.
- Must work in confined/cramped spaces, occasionally kneeling, prop bending, twisting, squatting, and performing pinching operations.
- Must perform gross and fine motor activities with fingers and hands; must grasp firmly.
- Must reach overhead and perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders.
- Must use legs for balance; must lift and carry up to 50 lb unassisted, lift objects 50 lb from the floor up to 36 in unassisted, and lift 25 lb from 36 in to overhead; must exert up to 50 lb of force.
- Education:
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university. - Experience:
No mandatory experience requirements. - Certification:
Must hold or be willing to obtain HT(ASCP) certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification. Preferred if not certified must have completed a NACCLS‑Accredited HT/HTL program and must be certification‑eligible; must achieve certification within one year of hire. Salary will be 10 % lower until certification is achieved.
