The EMT/Firefighter serves as a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) primarily responsible for providing basic life support (BLS) emergency medical care, stabilization, and transport of the sick and injured. In addition, the EMT/Firefighter may perform secondary duties in fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials, and other emergency or non-emergency operations as assigned. This position requires strong patient care skills, teamwork, and physical readiness to serve the community in both EMS and fire-based responses.
EmergencyMedical Services (Primary Role)
- Provide basic life support (BLS) assessment, treatment, and transport in accordance with medical protocols, department guidelines, and state regulations.
- Perform patient assessments and provide approved EMT-level interventions including airway management, CPR, bleeding control, splinting, oxygen administration, AED utilization, and other approved treatments.
- Assist Paramedics with advanced life support (ALS) procedures and patient care as directed.
- Monitor and document patient conditions and communicate relevant information to receiving healthcare facilities.
- Complete accurate and timely electronic patient care reports (ePCR) in compliance with HIPAA and quality assurance standards.
- Maintain ambulances, medical equipment, and supplies in a constant state of readiness.
- Participate in EMS quality improvement, continuing education, and skill verification programs.
- Respond to fire, rescue, hazardous materials, and special operations incidents as assigned.
- Perform fire suppression duties including advancing hoselines, ventilation, salvage, overhaul, and search and rescue operations.
- Operate firefighting tools, equipment, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) safely and effectively.
- Support technical rescue operations including vehicle extrication, water rescue, confined space rescue, and other special operations incidents as trained and directed.
- Assist in protecting life, property, and the environment during emergency incidents.
- Participate in daily station duties, training, and physical fitness activities to maintain operational readiness.
- Conduct public education, fire prevention, and community risk reduction activities.
- Operate department vehicles in a safe and responsible manner while adhering to department policies and applicable laws.
- Maintain proficiency in both EMS and firefighting disciplines through continuing education and departmental training.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory officers.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- College coursework in Fire Science, EMS, or a related field preferred.
- Previous EMS, fire service, or public safety experience preferred.
- Current State EMT certification (or National Registry EMT with ability to obtain State certification).
- Current BLS Healthcare Provider certification.
- Ability to obtain Firefighter I certification (or equivalent). Firefighter II preferred.
- Ability to obtain Hazardous Materials Operations certification.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain EVOC/CEVO certification.
