Job Title: Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer / AI Strategist
Position Type: Temporary Contract
Duration: 12-month initial contract
Work Location: Columbia, SC (Hybrid 2-3 days onsite per week)

We are seeking an experienced Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer / AI Strategist to support strategic AI initiatives for a direct-client in South Carolina. This role reports directly to the client Head and works closely with the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to develop and implement AI-driven strategies that enhance operational efficiency, improve citizen services, and ensure compliance with state and federal regulatory standards.
The selected candidate will help define and drive the agency’s AI vision by evaluating and recommending AI technologies, fostering innovation, and collaborating with internal stakeholders. This position plays a critical role in advancing AI adoption while ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective governance.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and recommend AI strategies to improve agency operations and service delivery.
- Evaluate, implement, and optimize AI and machine learning technologies across agency functions.
- Ensure AI initiatives align with state and federal regulatory and data governance requirements.
- Collaborate with executive leadership, IT teams, and business stakeholders to drive AI adoption.
- Support strategic planning, change management, and stakeholder engagement related to AI programs.
- Promote innovation, transparency, and accountability in AI implementation.
- Bachelor’s degree and relevant program management experience.
- Hands‑on experience with AI technologies, machine learning, and data governance.
- Experience working within government or public sector environments.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in AI strategy, data analytics, or information technology.
- At least 2 years of direct experience with AI technologies, machine learning, and data governance.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in strategic planning, change management, and stakeholder engagement.
- 5+ years of experience working in government or public sector organizations.
