Information Security Specialist
Location:
Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina. Department: SAAS Information Technology, Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support. Job Level: P1 – Professional. Full‑time, 37.5 hrs/week (8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday–Friday), with flexibility required.
We seek an Information Security Specialist to protect critical systems through secure identity and access management, balancing security, compliance, and customer service. The role supports the technical environment of Student Affairs, ensuring secure and efficient operation of systems.
Responsibilities- Maintain Active Directory (user objects, computer objects, OUs, policies), ADFS, SAML, SSO, OAuth and related authentication technologies.
- Review and interpret identity, access, and audit logs in Microsoft Active Directory for investigations, access reviews, and policy validation.
- Monitor division software and applications to ensure they pass the TRB Technology Review Board process.
- Assist with HIPAA/FERPA compliance oversight and other federal/state regulation related to sensitive information protection.
- Create, modify and troubleshoot Group Policies; support Conditional Access, Insider‑Risk Management, DSPM for AI, DLP, Information Protection, and endpoint compliance.
- Respond to security‑related inquiries, phishing reports, and training participation.
- Collaborate with the DoIT Division of Information Technology to align security architecture, shared‑service boundaries, and tool access.
- Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned by the HIPAA Compliance and Security Officer.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- At least 1 year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience.
- Proficiency in computer hardware troubleshooting.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft, CompTIA, Security+).
- Sound judgment in organizing work and setting priorities to meet customer and departmental needs.
- Strong ethical, professional, service‑oriented and interpersonal skills with a customer‑focused approach.
- Effective problem‑solving and an ability to learn, adapt, and grow within the focus area.
