Job Responsibilities

The AV Specialist provides essential audiovisual (AV) and digital recording technology support for the South Carolina Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. This position ensures consistent, reliable day to day operation of courtroom AV systems, provides technical support for conference rooms, and assists with trial court technology needs under the direction of the Courtroom Technology Program Manager (CTPM).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position

Operate, monitor, and maintain AV and recording systems within the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals courtrooms. Provide trial court technology support statewide for Circuit Court and Family Court, including installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of courtroom AV and digital recording systems. Coordinate with ETV for streaming and troubleshooting needs.

Troubleshoot technical issues related to courtroom AV, audio equipment, microphones, cabling, and recording systems (Spider Mic, TEC, BIS, and FTR), escalating complex issues to the Courtroom Technology Program Manager as needed. Assist in configuring and administering Webex for courtroom use. Assist Court Services with routine quality checks of trial court courtroom recordings to identify issues affecting accuracy, clarity, and compliance with Judicial Branch standards.

Provide on site and remote support during live proceedings, ensuring technology functions without disruption. Manage video and teleconferences for the Court, to include scheduling, testing, setting up equipment, configuring services, managing recordings and presentation materials, and troubleshooting end user device software and connectivity for on-site and remote participants.

Provide onsite support for technology conference rooms located in the Calhoun Building, Supreme Court Building, and 1301 Gervais Street, as well as the Judicial Education Center (JEC), all located on the Columbia main campus.

Deliver hands on training and guidance to judges, clerks, and court staff on courtroom AV equipment and recording workflows. Develop, recommend, implement, and instruct on standard policies and procedures pertaining to the introduction and utilization of AV technology and equipment. Works closely with the Courtroom Technology Support Specialist (CTSS).

Maintain accurate documentation related to system performance, issue resolution, AV configurations, and equipment records. Assist with courtroom technology inventory, supporting lifecycle management and equipment tracking needs across appellate and trial courts.

Support the execution of technology projects initiated by the Courtroom Technology Program Manager. Perform other tasks as assigned by the Courtroom Technology Program Manager. Statewide travel is required to support trial court technology needs.

Effectively interact with all levels of court personnel and uphold a professional presence when representing the Judicial Branch in courtrooms, office environments, and during travel.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Associate's Degree in AV Technology, Information Technology, Sound Engineering, Broadcasting, or related technical field.

An associate's degree in a related technical field and at least two (2) years audiovisual, IT, or comparable technical support experience; OR

A high school diploma and at least four (4) years of documented hands-on experience working with audiovisual systems, video-conferencing platforms, courtroom technology, or related IT support work.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

* Working knowledge of courtroom AV systems and recording technologies.

* Strong troubleshooting skills for audio, video, and recording equipment.

* Ability to provide clear instruction to judges and court staff.

* Strong organizational skills for tracking equipment, documenting work, and supporting projects

* Ability to work in active courtroom environments with attention to detail.

* Strong verbal and written communication skills.

* Ability to work both independently and as part of the AV team.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience supporting AV systems in federal or state courts, public agencies, law firms, or other legal environments.

* Knowledge of courtroom AV control systems such as Crestron, Extron, or comparable platforms.

* Familiarity with basic networking concepts related to AV connectivity, including IP addressing, VLANs, and device management.

* Hands on experience with video conferencing platforms (Zoom, Webex, Teams) and integrated room systems.

* Experience troubleshooting displays, microphones, DSPs, and switching/routing equipment.

* Understanding of ADA, accessibility, or assistive listening technologies (nice to have).

* Experience working with vendors, integrators, or service contracts related to AV systems.
