Job SummaryGoogle's Hardware Operations team monitors and manages the advanced physical infrastructure powering Google's search technology. The Operations Technician will install, configure, test, troubleshoot, and maintain servers and their components, as well as Google's Linux cluster software. You will also configure complex networking components such as routers, hubs, bridges, switches, and network protocols, participate in or lead small project teams for larger installations, and develop contingency plans.
Manual movement and installation of racks is a daily requirement, with a focus on maintaining cutting‑edge infrastructure.
- Install, configure, test, troubleshoot, and maintain hardware components and server software.
- Configure complex networking components, including routers, hubs, bridges, switches, and network protocols.
- Deploy and operate new data center infrastructure across projects or functions.
- Report issues and troubleshoot straightforward equipment problems, applying the resources needed for resolution.
- Maintain the security and integrity of data, ensuring compliance with Google security standards.
- Disassemble and retire specific equipment or perform part replacement in a team setting.
- Repair, fix, and perform preventive maintenance on equipment, servers, and infrastructure.
- Participate in or lead small project teams on larger installations and develop project contingency plans.
- Experience with component‑level repairs and troubleshooting on technical equipment.
- Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting operating systems, computer/server hardware, or networking protocols.
- Ability to lift or move 50 lb (23 kg) and perform physically demanding work over extended periods, including bending, kneeling, climbing, and pushing/pulling.
- Availability to work non‑standard hours, including weekends, night shifts, holidays, and shift‑based schedules as required.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
- Completion of the online Google IT Support Professional Certificate program.
- Two or more years of experience diagnosing and troubleshooting operating systems or computer/server hardware, or networking protocols.
- Experience in IT equipment repair or similar roles (e.g., Systems Administration, Network Deployment Engineer, Help Desk Technician).
- Experience working within a data center or network operation center environment.
- Ability to collaborate and partner with teams and adapt to changes in a dynamic work environment.
US: $86,000 – $119,000 (USD) + 15% bonus target + equity + benefits.
