Job Summary

The Director of Housing and Residential Life is responsible for the overall planning, organization, implementation and supervision of all on‑campus housing and residence life. The position coordinates and supervises key housing services provided by USC Upstate, overseeing resident selection, assignments, managing resident relations, supervising staff, preparing complex budget and statistical reports, formulating annual budget requests and monitoring spending. The role partners with key university operations, coordinating with Facilities Management, Operations and Housekeeping, dining services, and overseeing student housing database utilization with Enrollment Services and the Registrar’s Office.

The director has financial oversight of a department with over $8 million in revenue and a main budget of approximately $3–4 million dollars in spending, including development and management of a facilities project budget. An essential part of budget management is controlling housing occupancy to match revenue and occupancy goals with university enrollment projections and strategic priorities. The staff operates in compliance with state/federal law and university guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Student Personnel Services or related field and 5 years related experience. At least three years prior budget management, and full‑time staff supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Strongly prefer experience in the formation, implementation, evaluation of effective housing policies and procedures. Strong background in housing operations, technology and finances.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

A successful background check is required. Record of successful occupancy and budget analysis. Strong organizational skills and interpersonal skills. Maintain confidentiality, managing multiple concurrent tasks, verbal communication, written communication, analytical and problem solving, on call for emergency situations. Knowledge of facilities management planning and operations. Expert knowledge level in housing information and technology systems. Effective knowledge and use of Microsoft Office Suite particularly with Excel.

Basic accounting knowledge. Knowledge of principles, regulations and laws related to housing and judicial affairs.
