Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director and Director, and the indirect supervision of the Associate Vice President / University Architect for Facilities Planning, Design and Construction, serves as project manager directly responsible for overseeing the design and execution of major capital construction and renovation projects, including overall monitoring of contract administration. Responsible to lead and mentor less experienced project managers through the planning, design, bidding, construction, and close out phases of project execution.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in engineering, architecture, construction management or related field from an accredited college or university, and 6 years demonstrated project management experience with the design, construction and management of major construction building projects; or bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, construction management or related field from an accredited college or university, and 8 years demonstrated project management experience with the design, construction and management of major construction building projects.

Demonstrated experience successfully leading, mentoring and developing less experienced team members with varying backgrounds, skill sets and competencies. Professional licensure as an engineer or architect or the ability to obtain professional certification as a construction manager or professional project manager in the State of South Carolina.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Knowledge of principles and practices of modern architecture, design engineering and facility construction/maintenance. Knowledge of codes, laws, rules and regulations governing the construction and/or modification of facilities. Knowledge of principles and practices of effective project management. The ability to interpret and apply rules and regulations; manage work and provide guidance to colleagues; make presentations and prepare reports; manage and prioritize a large and complex work load with short time frames;

make decisions with limited information and a strong experience base; resolve problems and communicate outcomes; interpret plans; interact with various levels of personnel; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; use technology; solve problems; utilize conscious decision making; and build teams and involve stakeholders. Knowledge of contractual responsibilities, processes and procedures governed by the AIA architectural agreements (Series A, B and

C). Ability to oversee the work of subordinate architects, engineers or construction managers. Ability to establish positive working relationships with customers/clients, superiors, subordinates, associates, design and construction consultants, and with State, Local and/or Federal professional personnel and other public and/or private sector organizations and individuals. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to problem solve and utilize effective conscious decision making. Ability to build teams and involve stakeholders.

Demonstrated competence performing technical review of plans and specifications.
