Overview
Description SUMMARY:
Responsible for safely setting up and operating a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. Accountable for the Safety, Housekeeping, Quality, Throughput and On-Time-Delivery of production work assigned, in coordination within and between departments or shifts.
Develops and maintains proper organization and levels of tooling inventories.
- Ensures the safety of themselves, transients and visitors; understands how machines work and how to operate them safely; knowledge of emergency stops and personal protective equipment in each work area.
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and veneer calipers.
- Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
- Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
- Set up, adjust, and operate basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
- Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
- Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
- Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to determine methods and sequences of operations and to determine product dimensions and tolerances.
- Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials for machinery work.
- Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock to display placement of cuts.
- Observe and listen to operating machines to diagnose malfunctions and determine needs for adjustments or repairs.
- Maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
- Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency.
- Promote teamwork and maintain harmony among all workers and shifts; support ISO 9001 policies, practices and/or procedures.
- Identify, support and implement continuous improvement activities such as set up reductions and running multiple machines.
- Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment; remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter.
- Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information.
- Support metalworking projects from planning and fabrication through assembly, inspection, and testing.
- Program CNC machines to verify that new programs or machinery will function properly and meet specifications.
- Evaluate experimental procedures and recommend changes for improved efficiency and adaptability to setup and production.
- Design fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet engineering needs.
- Prepare working sketches for product appearance.
- Provide direction and assistance in ISO 9000 related activities.
- Prefers a minimum of 5 years of machining experience.
- Must have CNC programming experience, preferably in the machining industry.
- Strong written and verbal communication with outside sources.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and maneuver 200 lbs independently.
- Ability to read blueprints.
- Strong Safety, Housekeeping and Quality attributes.
- Good practical knowledge of the metric system.
- Practical knowledge of Lean Manufacturing Techniques.
- Ability to read and complete Inspection Data Records and documents as required.
High school diploma or GED. Five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language SkillsAbility to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, quality manuals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to present information to management and customers.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions and deal with multiple variables.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations- Machinist certification preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License preferred.
- Ability to become forklift certified within 90 days of employment.
- Ability to become crane certified within 90 days of employment.
