Description

Job Summary

The Welder/Fitter is responsible for laying out, fitting, assembling, and welding steel components according to drawings and specifications. This position requires attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate assemblies that meet quality and dimensional requirements.

Job Description

  • Read and interpret fabrication drawings, measurements, and welding symbols.
  • Lay out, position, fit, and assemble steel components.
  • Measure and verify dimensions, angles, and alignment.
  • Tack weld and complete welds using approved welding processes.
  • Use squares, levels, tape measures, clamps, grinders, and cutting equipment.
  • Inspect completed assemblies for accuracy and quality.
  • Make adjustments or corrections when components do not meet specifications.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and a clean work area.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and wear required PPE.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Tier Qualifications

Welder/Fitter I

  • Entry-level fitting or welding experience preferred.
  • Basic ability to use measuring tools and fabrication equipment.
  • Able to assist with simple layouts and assemblies under supervision.
  • Willing to learn drawing interpretation, fitting methods, and company standards.

Welder/Fitter II

  • Previous welding and fitting experience in manufacturing or steel fabrication.
  • Able to read fabrication drawings and complete standard layouts.
  • Able to fit and weld common assemblies with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrates good accuracy, weld quality, and productivity.

Welder/Fitter III

  • Advanced welding and fitting experience in heavy steel fabrication or a similar environment.
  • Able to interpret complex drawings and complete detailed layouts independently.
  • Skilled in fitting large or complex assemblies and resolving dimensional issues.
  • Consistently produces accurate, high-quality work and may assist in training less-experienced employees.

Pay is determined based on the candidate’s experience and demonstrated level of expertise.

Requirements

General Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Welding, fitting, fabrication, or related technical training preferred.
  • Ability to pass company welding and fitting tests at the appropriate skill level.
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, measurements, and welding symbols, based on position level.
  • Knowledge of welding, fitting, layout, and assembly practices.
  • Ability to use tape measures, squares, levels, clamps, grinders, torches, and other fabrication tools.
  • Ability to perform basic shop math, including fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to measure accurately and verify dimensions, angles, alignment, and fit-up.
  • Ability to identify and correct basic fitting or dimensional issues.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Willingness to work overtime or different shifts when required.
  • Ability to follow all company safety rules and wear required PPE.

Experience by Tier

  • Welder/Fitter I: Entry-level experience or completion of a welding or fabrication program preferred.
  • Welder/Fitter II: Approximately 2–4 years of relevant welding and fitting experience preferred.
  • Welder/Fitter III: Approximately 5 or more years of advanced welding and fitting experience preferred.

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and hands-on experience may be considered.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to push, pull, position, and align steel components using appropriate equipment.
  • Ability to work in confined or elevated areas when required.
  • Ability to use hands and arms to operate welding and fabrication equipment.
  • Visual ability sufficient to read drawings, take measurements, and inspect completed work.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in a steel fabrication or manufacturing environment.
  • Regular exposure to heat, sparks, fumes, dust, noise, and moving equipment.
  • Required PPE may include a welding hood, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toed boots, and protective clothing.
