The Executive Director will work within the by-laws of Mental Health America of South Carolina (MHASC) to run operations, fundraising, financial management, administration and other aspects of management as they arise. The Executive Director will keep the board informed and work with the board to address mental health issues in our state.

  • Be the “public face” of the organization and reach our whole community

Full-time, salaried, exempt position

Major Responsibilities/Accountabilities
  • Vision and Leadership – supports operations and administration of Board by advising and informing board members, providing written report for each board meeting, interfacing between Board and staff, and supporting Board’s evaluation of executive director. Provide leadership in developing plans with the Board of Directors and staff, and carrying out plans and policies authorized by the Board. Assure that the organization has a strategic plan developed and approved by the Board which achieves its mission and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.
  • Office Administration and Management – develop, administer and maintain office hours, procedures and routines that facilitate the work of the organization and assure a timely human response to all office communications (phone, email, etc.)
  • Program, Product and Service Delivery – oversee programming effectiveness including design, marketing, promotion, delivery and quality of programs, products and services. Recommend development of new programs and responses to the community as appropriate to the Board for approval. Assist with volunteer training.
  • Financial, Tax, Risk and Facilities Management – work with the Finance Committee to develop and recommend the annual budget for Board approval; prudently manage organization’s resources within those budget guidelines according to current laws and regulations. Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  • Human Resource Management – effectively manage staff and volunteers according to authorized personnel policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and regulations. Recruit, employ and release all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers; perform annual staff performance evaluations.
  • Fundraising – in conjunction with the Board, the Executive Director assists in the development and implementation of fundraising events approved by the Board including identification of resource requirements, researching funding sources, submitting grant proposals, and maintaining fundraising records and documentation.
  • Community and Public Relations – assure the organization and its mission, programs, products and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive image. Expand awareness of MHASC.
  • Public Policy/Advocacy – serve as public advocate by increasing awareness and knowledge of significant developments and trends in mental health.
  • Position Qualifications
  • Management Experience – minimum of 5 years with at least 7 years of professional experience in healthcare, mental health services, or related nonprofit experience.
  • Development Experience and Nonprofit Brand Ambassador – must have worked with board members, community leaders, senior managers and others to develop and articulate a clear vision of a nonprofit organization. Must also have: experience in developing strategic plans and in funding and implementing your initiative; a track record of success in program planning and evaluation, grants management, strategic management and community engagement;

    and must be sensitive to the needs of diverse cultures and persons facing mental health issues.
  • Fundraiser – must have knowledge of nonprofit fundraising practices with demonstrated success in implementing fund development plans and raising support through: grants, events, major donor gifts, estate planning, obtaining in‑kind gifts, etc. The director will need to reach and engage with people at all levels of our…
