The National Mental Health Corps (NMHC) is a national mental health workforce development program that partners with universities, school districts, health care systems, and community-based organizations to expand access to mental health education, prevention, and support services. NMHC Ameri Corps Volunteers serve within their communities to strengthen local capacity to address mental health needs through evidence-based and evidence-informed South Carolina, there is an urgent need to increase mental health awareness, improve early identification of mental health concerns, reduce stigma, and strengthen community response systems.
NMHC Volunteers help meet this need by supporting the implementation of gatekeeper trainings and mental health education initiatives that provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to recognize warning signs, connect others to resources, and respond effectively.
Throughout their service term, Ameri Corps Volunteers receive training in identified mental health interventions, such as Mental Health First Aid and QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide prevention training. Volunteers then work alongside their host sites to deliver trainings, support outreach efforts, engage community members, and build sustainable mental health programming. Through service, partnership, and education, NMHC Volunteers help expand access to critical mental health resources and contribute to healthier, more resilient communities across South Carolina.
