This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) - Office of Mental Health,
C. M. Tucker, Roddey Pavilion, 2200 Harden Street, Columbia, SC 29203.
As the Registered Nurse, Institutional, under general supervision, you will assist in planning nursing care in a designated unit or area with the responsibility for assessment of nursing needs, initiation of nursing interventions, and delegation of assignment for nursing personnel.
Responsibilities for the Registered Nurse, Institutional:
- Identify symptoms of physical and emotional illnesses of residents by performing assessments, participating in care conferences and initiating and maintaining nursing care plans.
- Participate in the administration and documentation of medications and treatment to residents. Assist physicians, execute doctor's orders and maintain other nursing records and reports.
- Observe condition of residents by making frequent nursing rounds, supervising and evaluating nursing care, and maintain safe therapeutic environment for residents.
- Conduct and participate in training programs. Participate in orientation and on unity teaching of new employees.
- Know the philosophy, mission, policies and standards of the facility and nursing service and its implementations and set standards of quality nursing.
- Plan, coordinate, and evaluate the performance of nursing personnel under supervision.
- Charge Nurse for shift; may assume role of Nurse Manager II in his/her absence.
- Prepare time schedules and assign nursing care of residents and personnel according to their skill and preparation.
- Coordinate activities with other disciplines and promote good interpersonal relationships through effective communication.
- Serve on nursing committees and participate in nursing service programs.
- Licensure as a registered nurse by the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina.
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds; ability to see, hear at normal volumes, stand, walk, reach, pull, stoop, bend and climb at least two (2) flights of stairs. Ability to tolerate noise level and circulate in patient areas for long periods. Must be able to work with repetitive patient behaviors. May function as charge nurse.
- Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.
Post hire, employees must:
- Know the techniques and practices of the nursing profession, medical and nursing terminology, administrative methods and procedures. RNs must possess the ability to adhere to standing orders, policies and procedures.
- Be able to plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans; establish and maintain the confidence and corporation of patients; interact with patients in a culturally competent, professional manner.
- Be able to prepare educational and training material for nursing care programs.
- Be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Be able to appropriately respond to emergencies.
- Function as a team member, instructor, supervisor, and direct paraprofessional staff member.
