General Purpose

The primary purpose of this job position is to provide direct nursing care to residents and to supervise the day‑to‑day nursing activities performed by nursing assistants. Supervision must follow current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility and any directives from the Director of Nursing Services or Nurse Supervisor.

Administrative

Functions
  • Direct day‑to‑day functions of nursing assistants in accordance with facility rules and regulations
  • Ensure nursing personnel comply with written policies and procedures
  • Review department policies, procedure manuals, and job descriptions; recommend revisions
  • Meet with nursing staff and support personnel to plan shift services, programs, and activities
  • Keep Nursing Service Procedures Manual current and relevant to facility nursing procedures
  • Make written and oral reports or recommendations regarding shift activities as required
  • Cooperate with other resident services to coordinate nursing services and maintain resident care plans
  • Ensure personnel compliance with job descriptions
  • Participate in development and implementation of the facility’s quality assurance program for the nursing service department
  • Participate in facility surveys and inspections by authorized government agencies
  • Review and update resident written discharge plans; assist in planning nursing services portion of discharge plans
  • Interpret department policies and procedures for personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required
  • Complete accident/incident reports as necessary
  • Write resident charge slips and forward them to the Business Office
  • Maintain Daily Census Report and submit to Business Office as required
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, and charting as necessary
  • Adhere to data security policies regarding user  passwords
  • Report unauthorized attempts to access facility information systems
Charting and Documentation
  • Complete and file required record‑keeping forms and charts upon admission, transfer, and/or discharge
  • Encourage physicians to review treatment plans and sign orders, progress notes, etc., in accordance with policy
  • Record telephone orders from physicians on the Physician Order Form
  • Transcribe physician orders to resident charts, medication cards, and treatment plans
  • Chart nurses’ notes descriptively and informatively, reflecting care provided and resident response
  • Fill out and submit accident/incident reports to the Director as required
  • Document all reports of accidents or incidents involving residents
  • Record new or changed diet orders and forward to the Food Services Department
  • Report discrepancies in physician orders, diet changes, or charting errors to the Nurse Supervisor
  • Complete transfer forms according to established procedures
