Position: Horticulture Supervisor (#011738) Kirkland Correctional Inst., Columbia (RICHLAND) Level 3
Location: Columbia

Job Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision from the Chief Horticulturist, plan, monitor and supervise a horticulture program for inmates at your assigned location and other sites (if applicable).
  • Perform duties relating to the function of horticulture/grounds maintenance activities working with inmates to support a horticulture/grounds maintenance program and other horticulture special projects as assigned.
  • Provide supervision and instruction to inmate participants/assigned staff for the care of the complex grounds concerning landscape installation, maintenance, vegetable gardening and seasonal color.
  • Maintain equipment.
  • Responsible for inventory of chemicals, accountable for tools/equipment.
  • Responsible for the security of the work area.
  • Establish and maintain a greenhouse.
  • Assist with special event support.
  • Must obtain SC applicator's pesticide license within the first year of employment.
Training Requirements
  • Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
Minimum and Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina

Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and custodial, groundskeeping or maintenance experience directly related to the area of employment.

    • A high school diploma and custodial, groundskeeping or maintenance experience directly related to the area of employment or a horticulture degree focusing on the science and art of growing and managing plants.
    • Must obtain SC applicator's pesticide license within the first year of employment.
